Class Specification

FLOW CYTOMETRIST
315P

Class Series Concept:

Perform procedures and research activities in the field of flow cytometry.

Definition:

Perform procedures and/or research activities in a Flow Cytometry laboratory; and perform clerical,
quality control and recordkeeping procedures in support of the laboratory operation.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Under general direction, process specimens and perform flow cytometric analysis and interpretation
of data on varied tumor samples; prepare initial written report.

Typical Work:

Interpret cell cycle data and histograms with respect to laboratory statistics and published
references/literature to determine predicted patient prognosis; correlate findings from medical
literature statistics with patient history, tumor or tissue type; prepare initial written report;

Sort cell preparations into highly resolved populations using single or dual laser flow cytometry;

Use computer programs associated with the cell cycle analysis to produce graphically displayed
statistics; evaluate adequacy and change computer software options as needed to improve the
analysis;

Standardize and perform data acquisition on an analyzer using appropriate optics, light filters and
setting analysis conditions;

Record, interpret and report research data to build statistical base;

Conduct literature searches and adapt techniques to specific hospital and research needs;
                                                                                FLOW CYTOMETRIST
                                                                                                 315P
                                                                                            Page 2 of 2

Prepare cell suspensions from tissue samples by selecting, according to tissue condition, the
protocol for appropriate preparation;

Maintain procedure manuals, quality control, quality assurance, and College of American Pathologists
workload records;

Perform general laboratory duties such as preparing molar, normal and pH dependent solutions;

Perform routine maintenance on cell sorter and cell analyzer; tone machines;

Maintain laboratory instrumentation;

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s):

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is
the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each
position.

Desirable Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field

                                                 AND

One year of technical experience in a Flow Cytometry Laboratory

                                                  OR
