					Private Contracting: The Basics

Abstract
In an age of shrinking budgets, flexible work schedules, needs for working in retirement
and a shortage of service providers in the state, being a private contractor of vision
services can be a rewarding way to share your expertise, meet your needs and the
needs of people with a visual impairment. This presentation will introduce you to the
basics of having a small business contracting yourself as a vision related service
provider. It is easier than you might think!

Objectives

outline the general process for setting up a private contracting business

describe some advantages and disadvantages of private contracting

determine if private contracting is a viable business for the participant


Bio
Meg Walker, COMS, is a graduate of Western Michigan University’s Blind and Low
Currently I am a COMS working as a full time employee of the state of Virginia. Prior to
coming to Virginia I was a regular education teacher who job shared as a 2nd grade
teacher. On my days off from my teaching job I met a critical need for O&M services in
the state of Missouri by privately contracting with 7 different school divisions. It was a
terrific experience and I want to tell you about it!
