Monday, September 10, 2012
1. Focus: Read through Suzanne Berne's excerpt found on p. 36 in the text. Make a
quick SOAPST for this excerpt.
2. Objectives: The students will be able to do the following:
Define and explain diction and syntax.
Create and evaluate questions used to analyze diction and syntax.
Evaluate close-reading techniques.
3. Instruction: We will begin by reading in class aloud pp. 35-36 in the text. We will
go through the students' SOAPST from the focus. Read through “Analyzing
Style” p. 37-38. Have the students take notes and discuss each question. Read
through the first-impression questions, and have students answer aloud in class.
Finish class by reading through “Talking with the Text” pp. 38-40.

1. Focus: Yesterday you read Joan Didion's essay over the Santa Ana winds. Make
a SOAPST for this reading. Look up in the back of the book the definitions for
the following words:
annotation
thesis statements
topic sentences
imagery
oxymoron
2. Objectives: The students will be able to do the following:
Define and explain the annotative technique for close reading.
Use the annotative technique on a particular passage.
3. Instruction: We will closely review the annotative technique on pp. 40-42 in the
text. We will read through the annotated version carefully and note all questions
and notations orally. Students will receive a Hand-Out of the essay on p. 48.
They will work in groups of two in order to annotate the passage. All students
must turn in the annotated passage.

1. Focus: Read through the Dialectical Journal section of the text (pp. 42-43). Look
up and write out the definition of a dialectical journal in your focus notebook.
2. Objectives: The students will be able to do the following:
Identify and evaluate uses for a dialectical journal and a graphic organizer
to analyze literature.
Create a dialectical journal entry for a particular passage.
3. Instruction: Read through pp. 42-47 in the text. Have the students read and note
every section of the dialectical journal entry as well as the graphic organizer. Do
a think/pair/share and discuss which method would be more appropriate for a
given reading passage. Have the class come together for a short class discussion.
Hand-out the Sample Dialectical Journal Entry over Night, and then allow
students time in class to work on a dialectical journal entry for the passage on pp.
48-49.
4. Materials: Text, Sample Dialectical Journal, Focus Notebooks

1. Focus: Look at the advertisement on p. 50 in the text. What is the ad actually
saying? Does it appeal to you? Why or why not? Write five sentences.
2. Objectives: The students will be able to do the following:
Analyze a visual text and evaluate it's effectiveness.
Write a thesis sentence explaining a visual text.
3. Instruction: Have several students read aloud their focus activity. Read through
pp. 49-51. Hand-Out and advertisement for the students to analyze. Students may
work through this in groups of three. Students are to write a paragraph (eight
sentence) analysis.

1. Focus: Read through JFK's inaugural address found on pp. 52-54. Make a
SOAPST for this selection.
2. Objectives: The students will be able to do the following:
Analyze and essay using annotation and create ideas for writing.
Use analysis to write an essay over a passage.
3. Instruction: The students will go over their SOAPST for JFK's inaugural address.
Write this out on the board. All the students to see the speech given. This can be
obtained at the following website: (bedforstmartins.com/languageofcomp). After
watching, begin annotating. We will work through the first section together.
Have the students work through the last section on their own. We will begin the
writing on Monday.
4. Materials: Text, Copy of Inaugural Address, Video of the Address
