4-H Art of Leadership Participant Information Packet--2008 The purpose of Art of 4-H Leadership series is to provide an environment for you to develop your executive leadership skills, build cohesion with your colleagues and participate in conversations on significant issues that will positively impact 4H youth development in the future. The following information is provided to help you make your decision and to know what to expect when you attend. Location: February 19-21, 2008 – Tucson, AZ (3-day session) Hotel: Lodge on the Desert: www.lodgeonthedesert.com September 8 - 11, 2008 – Burlington, VT (4-day session) Hotel: Inn at Essex, Essex, Vermont http://www.vtculinaryresort.com/ Costs and Registration Fee: Registration fees for each session are $425.00. An on-line registration form will be available prior to each session. Session One: (February) The $425.00 registration fee includes: Leadership assessment, program materials, morning and afternoon breaks, breakfast (2), lunch (1), dinner (1) and the expenses of the consultant (Susan Halbert of Susan Halbert Consulting) and 3 Art of Leadership trainers. (See Art of Leadership Trainers-in-Training below.) The registration fee does not include: one breakfast (Tuesday), one lunch (Wednesday) and one dinner (Tuesday). Lodging: $139.00/night Session Two: (September) The $425.00 registration fee includes: Morning and afternoon breaks, breakfast (3), lunch (2), dinner (2), a special event, and the expenses of the consultant (Susan Halbert of Susan Halbert Consulting) and 3 Art of Leadership trainers. The registration fee does not include: one breakfast (Monday), one lunch (Wednesday) and one dinner (Tuesday). Lodging: $95.00/night Participants are responsible for their travel, lodging, pre-and post meeting travel meals, some meals (see above), the assigned leadership book ($20), and incidentals per session. These costs are estimated at $1,200 per session or $2,400 for both sessions (over two fiscal years). Self Assessment: As part of the Art of Leadership cohort, you will participate in a comprehensive leadership assessment. The 360 degree survey will help you determine your leadership ability from the perspective of your supervisor(s), peers, direct-reports, and yourself. You will review the results of your assessment and gain insight and support into your leadership capabilities at the February session. You will receive information regarding the 360 assessment once we have received confirmation of your registration. Please think carefully about 1012 people you could ask to complete this online survey regarding your leadership. Your confirmation email will explain the process in detail. We will also host a conference call to help explain the process and answer any questions. Trainers in Training: The time has come to move previous outstanding participants into more active and engaged roles in the 4-H Art of Leadership program. To that end, previous 4-H Art of Leadership participants will become eligible to be trainers for future sessions. The goal is to expand the opportunity for participants to continue to make the 4-H Art of Leadership program relevant, inclusive and sustainable and to expand the pool of leaders that can positively impact the long-term success of 4-H. National 4-H Headquarters and Barbara Stone will continue to provide oversight and programmatic leadership to the 4-H Art of Leadership. Here are some of the details:       The role of 4-H Art of Leadership trainers will be planning and logistics, content development and delivery, facilitation and support of participants, and training the next trainers. It will be a 2-year time commitment. Three trainers will be identified each year. Art of Leadership trainers will shadow/train in Year 1 and give primary leadership/train the next group in Year 2. Expenses will be paid 50% in Year 1 and 100% in Year 2. (Registration costs will cover the expenses of trainers.) Nominations will be open to past 4-H Art of Leadership participants who have completed both sessions. (Currently 2005 – 2007 cohorts). Nominations for trainers for the following year will be accepted in early fall and a screening process will be used to select 3 trainers annually from the 4-H Art of Leadership participant pool. Session Design: You know what it takes to design meaningful learning. We will include a mix of learning, and each session will include interactive learning, small group work, journaling and presentations by peers and outside experts. We will use facilitators to enhance understanding. The book The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner (3rd Edition) will be used to guide our learning at both sessions. Opening Session The opening session in both February and September will begin mid-morning (10:00am), so you may arrive that morning or the night before and take time for yourself before sinking your teeth into the substance of the session. We will schedule hospitality time 30 minutes prior to the opening of the leadership session. The opening session will allow time for introductions, give an overview of the purpose and objectives of the Art of Leadership, and assure common understanding. We will begin with a group building activity to build rapport and accelerate learning. Start and End Times: Sessions will begin each morning at 8:15 a.m. and will conclude by 5:00 p.m. Meal Times: Meals will be reserved for informal discussion. We will not schedule presentations, keynote addresses or small group time during meal times. A full breakfast will be provided on all mornings except for Day One (on your own). If you have special needs for meals, please contact the program coordinator. Dinner: Dinner will be as a group on one night in Session One (February) and two of the three nights in Session Two (September). This is time for you to connect with one another, discuss issues informally and enjoy socializing with your colleagues. After Dinner: Given the intensity of sessions, as well as the length of your day, no formal sessions will be scheduled after dinner. Breaks: There will be two breaks (morning and afternoon) per day for refreshments, comfort, and networking. Each break will be scheduled for at least 20 minutes. Lunch: An hour is allocated for lunch on the first day. On Day Two (Session 1) and Day Three (Session 2), 2 hours have been allocated for lunch on your own. This gives you an opportunity to decompress, exercise, reflect informally on the session so far, and network with your colleagues. Adjournment: The sessions will end on the last day by 12:00 noon to give you enough time to have lunch and catch mid- to late-afternoon flights home. Please avoid scheduling your flight before 2:00 p.m. For More Information: National 4-H Headquarters provides support for program leadership, coordination, and instruction. National 4-H Council provides in-kind support for administering the leadership assessment, hotel contracts and billing, and participant registration.
