The 9th grade Health and Fitness class is comprised of both health and physical education
content and skills.

The emphasis of the physical education strand is to explore the many facets of
cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility fitness. Students will
learn safe and current methods to begin, maintain, or enhance their current level of
physical fitness that will bring a lifetime of benefit.

FITNESS activities include:
Adventure team work- team building activities, low ropes course activities

Fitness Gram- physical fitness testing (1 mile run, curl-ups, push ups, flexibility test)
tested in fall and spring of school year.

Fitness Training- strength training, cardiovascular work outs, circuit training using the
weight room and a variety of other equipment, development of a personal fitness plan

Self Defense- an introduction to Martial Arts and kick boxing

Dance- introduction to a variety of dance, creation of a group dance performed in front of
class

Mountain Biking- safety, bike maintenance, trail rides on campus

Create-A-Game- students will develop an entire game, from type of equipment, space
needed, rules, and scoring.

HEALTH CONCEPTS and HEALTH SKILLS
Health Concepts units include personal wellness, nutrition, injury prevention and cpr/first aid,
alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and human growth and development.

Health Skills include accessing information, interpersonal communication, analyzing
influences, decision making/goal setting, and self management

Grading

Classwork assignments/participation, quizzes, and homework                         60%

Tests and projects                                                                 40%
