Sunderland in 2012 Coaching and Officials Bursary
To ensure a lasting legacy is in place beyond the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games for participation in sport and physical activity a funding pot has
been identified to support residents from Sunderland to either gain a new coaching
qualification, to access Continuous Professional Development (CPD) or to become a
match official.
The funding is part of Sunderland City Council’s ‘Sunderland in 2012’ which will see
a wide variety of sporting, arts and cultural events being delivered providing
opportunities to take part, by either doing, watching or supporting through
volunteering in Sunderland in 2012.
Woven throughout the programme will be a number of area based community
activities, inter-area challenges and a world record attempt! There really will be
something for everyone…
Bursaries Available
There are four different bursaries that you can apply to:
1. Start Up Fund
This is for individuals who are looking to start up a new club/team/group or
have been coaching an existing club/team/group that has been in existence
for less than 12 months and require funding to become a qualified coach to a
minimum of level 1.
2. Level 2 + Fund
This is to support coaches who are looking to progress to a level 2 coaching
qualification or above.
3. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Fund
This is for club members who need to attend further courses or workshops
that are not a coaching qualification for example marketing and promotion,
safeguarding, business planning, first aid, how to improving technique or an
introduction to nutrition.
4. Officials training
This is for people who are interested in becoming a match official such as an
umpire, referee, line judge, starter etc…
Amount of Funding Available
1. Start Up Fund
Funding of up to £150 or 50% of the course fee will be funded (which ever is
less). Applications should be made by an individual.
2. Level 2 + Fund
Funding of up to £250 or 50% of course fee will be funded (which ever is less)

3. Continuous Professional Development Fund
Funding of up to £25 per person is available. You can apply as an individual
or a club can make one application for up to 10 club members
4. Officials Fund
Funding of up to £70 or 50% of course fee will be funded (which ever is less)
Criteria
Please make sure before you progress with your application you match the
criteria listed below.
The Start Up Fund, Level 2+ Fund and CPD funds are only available for
volunteers. If you receive payment for your coaching services the scheme is
not applicable to you.
The Officials Fund is accessible if you receive payment for you services
All applicants working with people over the age of 16 must register as a Sport
Maker on www.sportmakers.co.uk if successful in receiving funds
Any coaches applying must register with Tyne and Wear Sports North East
Coach Finder on www.necoachtw.org
On completion of the course, each individual will complete a post course
monitoring form to show the impact the bursary has made

To be eligible to access the funding you must meet the following criteria:
1. Start Up Fund
- The club/group must be based in Sunderland
- If the individual is attached to an existing club, then it must not have been in
existence for more than 12 months and should be affiliated to the relevant
Sporting National Governing Body (NGB) i.e. the FA for football or British
Gymnastics for gymnastics
- If you are looking to start a new club you will need to meet with City Council
Sport and Leisure officers to discuss this to ensure that there is a need for a
new club and that there is no risk of displacing users from other groups (see
contacts below).
- If you are setting up a club, group or team that attracts participants between
the ages of 14-25 there may be additional funding available to support with
further costs.
2. Level 2+ Fund
- Coaches must be a member of a club in Sunderland which is affiliated to the
relevant NGB
- Coaches should already have a minimum of a level 1 qualification in the same
sport.
3. CPD Fund
- The applicant must be a member of a community sport club in Sunderland.
- Coaches must be a member of a club in Sunderland which is affiliated to the
relevant NGB
4. Officials Fund
- The applicant must live in Sunderland.
