I: Introduction
A. Thesis Statement:
II. Ethos
A. Statement: Landsburg establishes ethos through his examples from his
dealings with his daughter’s teachers.
a. Proof: “At that point, we decided to share our concerns with the
teachers. They were genuinely apologetic and there were no more
incidents. I have no doubt that the teachers were good and honest
people who had no intent to indoctrinate, only a certain naivete derived
from a provincial upbringing” (pg. 4, paragraph 1)
b. Commentary: Using examples from his dealings with teachers
establishes credibility with his audience, parents, as a fellow parent.
Parents are more likely to believe and listen to a fellow parent than
someone who is inexperienced with teachers and parenting in general.
Establishing his credibility helps Landsburg reach his audience so that
he can inform them of the indoctrination of their children. This also
may help him reach another possible audience, teachers, because he
says that he “has no doubt that the teachers were good and honest
people.” By giving the teachers the benefit of the doubt in their
intentions, he shows that he is reasonable to other teachers and they
will be more likely to listen to him about the diversity in opinion that
he is trying to inform them about.
