The Senior Policy Manager post has a key role in developing policy for the Liberal
Democrats working with Liberal Democrats in Government, Parliament and the
wider Party. It has close relationships with Liberal Democrats in government,
Parliamentary Party Committees, Federal Party Committees, and other LDHQ
departments in particular Marketing, Media and Campaigns.

Key responsibilities include:

        Generating a stream of distinctive Liberal Democrat policy ideas both for
         implementation in government and to champion for future Liberal
         Democrat majority government action.
        Offering strategic policy development support to Parliamentary Party
         Committees.
        Supporting the Federal Policy Committee to deliver programme of policy
         development.
        Supporting external communications by working closely with Marketing
         Department and Campaigns department.
        Supporting internal communications by helping publicise policy
         achievements in government.
        Promoting the party’s image in civil society, by undertaking a strategic
         approach to engaging with NGOs, Think Tanks and other outside bodies
         with a policy interest.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Desirable Skills and Experience

A self-starter with outstanding political judgement, the post holder will need to be
able to manage several projects simultaneously and work collaboratively both across
the Liberal Democrat party and with civil society groups.

   1. Strong political awareness and understanding of Liberal Democrat values.

   2. Ability to build relationships with key stakeholders in the Liberal Democrats,
       including portfolio Parliamentary Party Committees and Liberal Democrats in
       government, and ability to reach out to and engage with think tanks, NGOs
       and civil society more widely.

   3. Project management, working to deadlines with minimal supervision over an
       extended period of time, co-ordinating inputs from others and handling
       multiple responsibilities.

   4. Ability to assimilate new and complex material very rapidly.

   5. Ability to write fluently and coherently, bringing together complex policy
       issues and proposals.
