8 Passport Syllabus 2012-2013 Mrs. Metzner Room B4 firstname.lastname@example.org www.teacherweb.com/CA/SequoiaMiddleSchool/MrsMetzner Welcome to eighth grade at Sequoia Middle School! I am excited to embark on a rewarding and challenging year with you in which we will develop skills for effective writing, reading, critical/analytical thinking, and public speaking. Throughout the year we will encounter various mediums including the novel, short story, poetry, and non-fiction writing. DAILY REQUIRED MATERIALS In order to be successful in this class, you must come to class prepared. Being prepared includes bring the following materials with you each day: 3 Ring Binder with dividers Novel or work we are studying Blue/Black/Red pens & highlighter College-ruled paper Study Guides, Worksheets, or various materials listed on my website ATTENDANCE Daily attendance is required and essential to your education. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Please contact a classmate for missed assignments and announcements. If you need clarification, please see me before or after class, not during instructional time. In addition, you can always consult my website for ongoing homework assignments or announcements about upcoming quizzes and tests, but please do not rely solely on the website. If you miss a quiz or a test you have two weeks to make up the missing assignment. My set make-up day is Wednesday at lunch; however, I am always willing to accommodate your schedule if you communicate with me ahead of time. Failing to make up quizzes or tests within the two weeks (without consulting with me first) will result in a zero. Check ZANGLE after absences to see if you have missed a quiz or assignment. As dictated by district policy, students will have one day per day absent to make up any missed assignments. Please Note: Assignments which are one day late will receive ½ credit. After that, the assignment will receive a zero. CLASS PARTICIPATION It is crucial that you come to class prepared and ready to participate. Class will involve discussions, group, and partner work on a daily basis. Participation will be a part of your grade and failure to participate, or any disruptive behaviors that hinder other student's participation, will negatively affect your grade. STUDENT CONDUCT In order to get the most out of each class period it is important that we have some class rules to create a safe and efficient environment. Please: Be on time, in your seat, and prepared for class to begin before the bell has rung. If you are in the classroom, but not physically in your seat, you will be marked tardy. Be alert and ready to participate in classroom discussions/activities. Respect yourself and others (do not talk while another student is sharing, be constructive—not critical, don't get up out of your seat during lectures or class discussions, etc.) *Please note: you will lose weekly participation points if you are talking while someone else is sharing or if you interrupt the learning process. Refrain from inappropriate and distracting behavior as well as offensive language. Abide by all Sequoia school rules. Please Note: my classroom is a cell phone free zone: this includes time spent in my classroom during the passing period. There is no reason your phone should be out during class. If your phone is out on your desk, in your lap, or in your hands during a test or a quiz you will receive a zero on the assignment, and may receive a cheating referral depending on the situation. Think ahead, and keep your cell phone in your back pack or purse with the ringer off. GRADING POLICY Grades are not given but are earned. Grades will be based upon points accumulated from homework, quizzes, projects, in- class assignments, tests, and writing assignments. Grades are not weighted. I update my grades almost daily on ZANGLE. Please check your grade on a regular basis to monitor your own progress. If there is a concern, come to me immediately to discuss. Finally, I do not round grades at the end of the trimester for any reason. My grading scale as displayed in Zangle is set to automatically "bump" your grade from a B+ to an A- if you achieve an 89.5% or higher, the remaining scale is as follows: A: 100-89.5% B: 89.4-79.5% C: 79.4-69.5% D: 69.4-60% F: 59-0% Extra Credit Extra credit opportunities will be given at my discretion and are always academically based. Do not expect to receive more than one extra credit opportunity a trimester. In other words, do not rely on extra credit to “boost” your grade, but take advantage of it when it is offered. CONTACTING THE TEACHER My preferred mode of communication is email. Emailing me is the fastest way to get a reply, as I cannot discuss your concerns when there are students present in my room. If you would like to speak with me by phone, please leave a message and I will return your call within 42 hrs. Students can make an appointment to meet with me before school, after school, or during the lunch period. Additionally, my door is always open for "walk-ins" at lunch (barring appointments), and I encourage all of my students to stop by if they want to meet, have questions, or need help. Please take the time to come see me if you are struggling! I am here to help, and I want to see you succeed!
