PTA Questionnaire Feedback
As you will be aware, we issued a questionnaire in January in order to get your views on some of the core areas of
PTA activity and thereby be able to plan better for the future. We have now analysed the responses received and a
summary of the main outputs and proposed actions is detailed below.
Clearly, we can only make decisions based on the information provided and in order to ensure we take actions in
the core areas, these will be focused where we received multiple responses on a common theme.
A big thank you goes to everyone who took the time to respond.
Please feel free to contact any PTA committee member if you wish to discuss anything further
PTA Committee –February 2009
General response-there was a total of 39 responses. Given the potential total number, this represents a response
rate of 20-25%.

Question 3- PTA should start doing/ do more of
There was a broad range of suggestions in this area. The main theme was around improved communication (also
reference proposed actions for question 5) and a number of ideas raised are already covered by material posted on
the PTA web site (http://www.st-james-elstead.surrey.sch.uk/page35a.html ) -details of how to access this were also
included in the January newsletter which was recently circulated. This allows access to AGM and committee
meeting minutes, newsletters and details of forthcoming events.
Improved transparency on the annual income and expenditure was also requested. The annual accounts for the
year ending 31 August 2008 are currently being independently verified. Once this is completed this will also be
made available on the web site.
Question 4-PTA should stop doing /do less of
The main feedback was around doing a small number of big events per year, with less raffle tickets/ smartie
tube/gift wrap type of smaller activities. This will be taken into account in event planning in the future.
Question 5-Communication methods
Receiving information top 3- e-mail, newsletters, notice boards
Providing feedback-top 3- e-mail, class reps, questionnaire
This indicates a desire for both electronic and conventional forms of communication. The school has also recently
stated their requirement to communicate more in a paperless way, so we will be co-ordinating our response with
them, especially since we use book bags as a main channel for information.
Question 6-Supporting PTA activities
Activity Running Providing Setting up/ DIY Advice Other
stalls food Packing up activities
Number willing 17 14 18 5 5 2
A big thank you goes to these volunteers, without whom we would not be able to operate. We will keep the details
of who has offered support in which area and contact people accordingly.
Question 7-Willing to make a regular monthly donation
13 people have stated their willingness to make regular monthly donations. Kerry Pickering (PTA Treasurer) will be
contacting them to set this up.
Question 8-Interested in becoming a Committee member
2 people expressed an interest in becoming committee members from October 2009. We will contact those people
to provide further information
Question 9-Interested in being a member of a sub-committee
16 people expressed an interest in being a member of a sub-committee for future events. We will keep the details of
who has offered support in which area and contact people accordingly
Question 10-any other ideas
The only comment received here related to asking people for general information on transferable skills. Hopefully
this has been captured under question 6, but if anyone has any idea of ways they could contribute further, please
contact a PTA committee member.
General comments and feedback
The phrase “you can’t please all of the people all of the time” certainly came to mind when reading the
various comments about the above events. Overall, people were positive and constructive with their
opinions. Many comments conflicted – some want events on week nights, others prefer weekends and
some feel events should start straight from school. The PTA has to work closely with the school
management when organising any event – access to the school and time demands on teachers and other
staff after school hours have to be considered when putting events together. That said, we will review the
time and timing of the core events to see if we can accommodate the majority of comments.
On the matter of fundraising, some felt prices were too high and there should be more “free” events. One of
the key objects of the PTA is “engaging in activities or providing facilities or equipment which support the
school and advance the education of the pupils”. In order to provide facilities and equipment, we need to
raise funds, which in recent years have allowed the purchase of whiteboards, books, a swimming pool, and
sports equipment –items that benefit all the children at the school. Provision of free events would reduce
our ability to do this, but we do aim to make the events good value for money.
