Materials
 Tangram Pieces (1 set per group of 2 or 3 students)
 Picture Template(s) (1 per group of 2 or 3 students)
 7th Grade TAKS Formula Chart (1 per student)
 372 Area and Perimeter Dissection Student Sheet (1 per student)
 Hint Cards (1 set per teacher)
 Area Samples (to be made by teacher). These are posters displaying how to find the area of each figure. (1
set per teacher)

Objective
Students will review finding the area and perimeter of basic and composite shapes in a problem solving
setting. (Teacher is considered the HELP desk in this activity.)

Procedures
1. Explain to the students that they will be reviewing themselves on the concept of area and perimeter of
basic shapes. Explain that the will be the teachers and learners and that you are the HELP desk and that
they should come to you after seeking out all of the other help options that are provided. At this time
show them the area sample posters and the hint cards.

2. Give the students a brief overview of the activity and the tasks that they will need to accomplish. Point
out the point values allotted to each section. Remind the students that they will have 2 days to finish this
activity, so they will need to manage their time wisely.

3. Assign students to groups of 2 or 3 students or allow students to pick their own partner(s).

4. Pass out needed materials and allow each group to choose the picture template they would like to use.

5. Students should work with their partners to complete each part of the activity.

****Part I Suggestion: This part would be best timed. This part serves as an engagement and problem solving
piece. One option is to give the students 5 minutes to try and fit the pieces into the polygon of their choice.
After 5 minutes tell them the placement of 1 or 2 pieces, then give them 5 more minutes to complete it. If they
aren’t done in 10 minutes then give them the placement of the pieces.****

****Watch the students to be sure none of them use the ruler to measure the larger polygon. They must use
the tangram pieces. Some of the measurements are rounded to the nearest half. If they use a ruler, they will
