Affiliate of App Society For Human Resource Management General Meeting – April, 2008 Indian Hills Country Club Thursday, April 17, 2008 Will Patton called meeting to order at 12:05 pm President (Will Patton) Will welcomed everyone to the meeting. Will informed the members that there were flyers on each table for the Alabama SHRM State Conference on May 21, 2008. Registration is available on-line. He reminded everyone that the UA Fall HR Conference is scheduled for October 23 -24, 2008. Will thanked Glenn Dodd with Cold Stone Creamery on University Blvd. for providing desserts for the meeting. Asked for reports from Board members. President Elect/Membership (Jennifer Allen) Jennifer thanked everyone for their attendance. She announced that we had two members approved by the board : David N. Birchfield, Director of Personnel & Process Safety Mgr, Peco Foods Emily Marbutt (SPHR), HR Manager, Bank of Tuscaloosa. Jennifer thanked everyone for bringing guests to the meetings. Communications (Karin Williams) Karin informed the members that she was very close to having the membership list updated and should have it ready for everyone by the end of April. Treasurer (LaTrenda Hardy) No report Secretary (Lavonda Dodd) No report. Legislative (Tom Scroggins) Deferred to presentation. Workforce Readiness Advocate and Webmaster (Richard Crawford) Richard informed everyone that he had flyers on the sign-in table for a Veteran’s Job Fair on May 1, 2008. It will take place at the VA Hospital. Diversity (Jackie Waters) Not present. Certification (Kimberly Wheeler) Kimberly indicated that she is very excited about the new certification initiatives that she has been working on. She introduced our new “Club Certifiable” – this will highlight our members who are certified. They will offer tips to certification and how it has impacted their career. Our first member is Will Patton. He has been very active in THRP and has served as HR Manager at Westervelt for 6 years. He indicated that certification has helped him grow as an HR professional. He said that certification shows that someone is serious about HR and has a desire to succeed. His advice to those pursuing certification is to “study all the sections and practice”. Kimberly presented Will with a gift. She asked the membership for volunteers to join the club. She also invited everyone to visit the web site to see the highlights our Club Certifiable members Kimberly announced a trivia contest that started with the last newsletter. Our winner is Sheila Hare and Kimberly will present her with a $20 gift card to Ruby Tuesdays. The other 2 respondents, Wendy Barrett and Bruce Mills, received small gifts in appreciation for their participation and efforts. Kimberly also announced that she needs a few volunteers to teach the last 3 modules for the certification class. The class will start the first week of May. Ambassadors (Gloria Lamon) Gloria was not present but Stacey Bledsoe informed everyone of the following announcements for our members: Beth Lipsey was recently promoted to Assistant VP at First National Bank. Will Patton and his wife will be having a baby boy in 2 weeks. Jimmy Parrish was highlighted in last Sunday’s Parade Magazine in the “What People Earn” issue. He will also be featured in the Business section of this Sunday’s Birmingham News. Jimmy is serving as a keynote speaker for 2 upcoming HR programs. Next week he will address 60 HR professionals in Columbus, GA on “Identity Theft Risk Management and Its Implications for HR”. He will also be the breakfast presenter in May in Pasadena, CA on the same topic. Past President (Russell Dubose) Russell reminded everyone that Craig B. Clayton will be our speaker next month. He will be speaking on Workforce Diversity. Programs (Charlotte Lewis) Not present. Richard introduced our speaker, Tom Scroggins with our annual Legal Update. SHRM Foundation (Kathy McCulley) Not present. Will conducted the 50/50 drawing. Winners were: Kimberly Wheeler, Ron Jesser and Will Patton.
