Dr. Dianne Timm
The Department of Counseling and Student Development is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Dianne Timm as
a new tenure-track faculty member. Dr. Timm graduated from the University of Georgia in Counseling and Student
Personnel Services. She will be teaching courses for the M.S. in College Student Affairs program.

Dr. Angela Yoder
The Department of Counseling and Student Development is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Angela Yoder as
a new tenure-track faculty member. Dr. Yoder graduated from Indiana State University in Counseling Psychology. Dr.
Yoder's primary teaching emphasis is in Clinical Counseling. Dr. Yoder has extensive experience in clinical therapy with
children. Research interests include: Foster parenting, play therapy, sexual abuse of children, and attachment disorders.

Graduate Student Orientation
On Friday, August 26, 2011, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. the Department of Counseling and Student Development is sponsoring a
Graduate Student Orientation in Room 1501, Buzzard Hall (Auditorium). This orientation is required of all new CSD
students in order to review policies, procedures, and expectations as well as provide an opportunity for program faculty to
greet you. The meeting will be followed by a potluck, supper from 5:30-7:00 p.m. hosted by COSPA and Chi Sigma Iota,
our student organizations.
Graduation Application
The last day to apply or reapply for graduation for the Fall Semester is November 1, 2011. Applications may be obtained
through the PAWS System. After signing on to PAWS, click on the Records tab to arrive at the application.
Commencement will be held on December 17, 2011.

Dr. Charles Eberly
Dr. Eberly retired from Eastern Illinois University effective May 31, 2011. His advisees have been reassigned. If you have
any questions regarding advisement please call 217-581-2400.

Policy for Counseling Labs
NO food or drinks are allowed in the Counseling Labs (Rooms 2118-2126).

2012-2013 Graduate Assistantships
Eight (8) graduate assistantships were allocated to the Department of Counseling and Student Development for the 2011-
2012 academic year. We anticipate our allocation for 2012-2013 to be similar. Each of these assistantships provides a
stipend per month for nine months and tuition waivers. Students interested in an assistantship for the 2012-2013 academic
year should go on-line at https://www.eiu.edu/~graduate/GAapplication/GAappl.php and complete an application no
later than March 1, 2012.

Spring 2012 Practicum/Supervised Experience (Internship) Informational Meeting
Clinical and School Counseling students who plan to enroll in Practicum (CSD 5630) or Supervised Clinical Experience
(CSD 6900) or Supervised School Experience (CSD 6920) during Spring 2012 must attend one of the following
mandatory informational meetings:

Clinical Counseling
 Monday, September 26, 2011 – 3:00 p.m. (Room 2125, Buzzard Hall)

 Wednesday, October 5, 2011 – 6:30 p.m. (Room 2125, Buzzard Hall)

School Counseling
 Tuesday, September 20, 2011 – 3:30 p.m. (Room 2125, Buzzard Hall)

 Wednesday, September 28, 2011 – 3:30 p.m. (Room 2125, Buzzard Hall)

Students must attend this meeting or enrollment will not be allowed.
Students who are completing 2nd semester internships at the same site as their first semester are not required to attend the
meeting, but do need to submit a new contract.
 Contracts for Clinical and School Counseling Practicum or Internship are due: November 18, 2011.

2011 ICA Conference
The Illinois Counseling Association (ICA) Conference will be held in Skokie, Illinois, on November 11-12, 2011. The
conference registration form may be obtained at the ICA Website: http://www.ilcounseling.org

Illinois (School Counselor) Certification Examination
Students interested in taking the Basic Skills and/or School Counselor Certification Examination should register through
the internet at www.icts.nesinc.com. Study Guides for the School Counselor exam may be found at
http://www.icts.nesinc.com/PDFs/IL_field181_SG.pdf. Dates for the Illinois Certification Examination are:

School Guidance Certification
Applications for School Guidance Certification may be obtained in Room 2102, Buzzard Hall (581-2400). This application
should be submitted during the final semester of coursework. Also, individuals applying for certification need to register
for and complete the appropriate tests required by the Illinois State Board of Education. For further information, visit the
Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) website at http://www.icts.nesinc.com.

EIU Homecoming
Homecoming 2011 will be held on October 22-23, 2011. For further details refer to the Eastern News.

NBCC GSA-NCC Licensure Examination (Clinical Counseling)
Students interested in taking the NBCC National Certified Counselor Examination should contact Dr. Richard Roberts
after November 1st to complete an application. Deadline to submit this application is January 20, 2012. The next
examination date is April 21, 2012. Two NCE Study Guide Notebooks have been placed on reserve in Booth Library to
assist students. Ask for CSD or Dr. Robert’s name when requesting these study guides.

Comprehensive Examination
The Comprehensive Examination for students completing the M.S. in School Counseling or Clinical Counseling is
scheduled for Friday, November 4, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Room to be announced). Graduate students wanting
to take the examination should do the following: (1) Have your study plan approved by the Department of Counseling and
Student Development, and (2) Register to take the exam with the secretary in Room 2102, Buzzard Hall. Sample questions
may be obtained from the Secretary in Room 2102, Buzzard Building.
NOTE: Students who have successfully passed the State's school guidance certification exam or NCE examination by
November 4th may request to have the comprehensive examination waived by contacting the secretary in Room 2102,
Buzzard Hall (581-2400).

Counselor Licensure
The Professional Counselor and Clinical Professional Counselor Licensing Act became effective January 1,
1993. It requires licensure to provide professional counseling services to individuals, couples, groups,
families, and organizations in any field of professional counseling. Application may be obtained at

Study Plan Applications
Students admitted to the department on full degree status should make an appointment with their advisor to complete their
study plan prior to the completion of 12 semester hours of graduate study.

The regular hours for Booth Library for the Fall Semester are as follows:

Professional Attendance Stipends
The Department encourages graduate student attendance at professional conferences. Therefore, stipends of $50 to $250
have been established for graduate students in the Department of Counseling and Student Development. An application
may be obtained from the Secretary in Room 2102, Buzzard Hall. Deadline for application for Fall Semester is
October 20, 2011.

Professional Organizations
Vital to any profession are the organizations it creates to further its standards, ethics, research, accreditation and
governance. Students are urged to join appropriate professional organizations and to attend and present programs as well.
Full-time students are offered membership at half price in any professional organization. Faculty members belong to
professional organizations, attend conferences, present programs, and hold office. Students are encouraged to join but are
not limited to the following organizations:

 American Counseling Association (ACA)
The American Counseling Association is the national professional association for counselors. ACA has been instrumental
in setting professional and ethical standards for the counseling profession. The Association has made considerable strides
in accreditation, licensure, and national certification. It also represents the interests of the profession before Congress and
federal agencies. (ACA has 16 specialty divisions, which provide you with information and resources specific to your needs

 Illinois Counseling Association (ICA)
The Illinois Counseling Association is the state branch of the national association. The Association is an education,
scientific and professional organization whose members are dedicated to the enhancement of the worth, dignity, potential,
and uniqueness of each individual, and thus to the service of society. Members subscribe to the Ethical Standards of the
American Counseling Association. (ICA has 8 divisions, which provide you with information and resources specific to

 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA)
NASPA's current mission is to serve student affairs administrators who work with students in higher education.
