Draft Proposal of Pilot Program written by Dr. Scurria-
Dr. Konecky presented the draft pilot program for process writing to the Leadership
Team, along with asking for faculty release time and they will give a response to it within
two weeks. The Leadership Team normally meets at the beginning of each month.
Debbie McDonough asked if we should try to get a response from them sooner, so that
we can go ahead and start working on the program.
Bhargava asked what is the difference between process writing and traditional writing?
Dr. Scurria answered saying traditional writing is when a student is given an assignment,
does it and turns it in. The teacher gives it back with a note saying make corrections and
the student revises the paper with the same errors still there. Where as, with process
writing the student’s papers will be peer reviewed, meaning the audience is no longer the
teacher, others will read it also. And this way the students will either learn to write a
different way or continue writing the same.
Focus on Pilot Program-
Dr. Newell asked if we should create a subcommittee, that have similar backgrounds to
look over the proposal and let them bring there concerns back to us.
Dr. Thomas stated that we have a control group and a cohort group for process writing.
Dr. Konecky asked if it is possible to teach process writing in larger classes.
Dr. Hoskins stated that after looking over the draft proposal, that the pilot program should
be as close to the actual program as possible. The class size, should be the same and we
should work with the same group of students each semester in order to get an accurate
Purpose of the Pilot-
Dr. Konecky stated that the purpose of the pilot is mini project that will consist of
training faculty and they will train there students how to do process writing. And in the
end it will become a full writing across the curriculum projection. The pilot will show us
whether or not the program works and what changes need to be made.
Dr. Scurria said that she will try to contact someone at OleMiss and Millsaps to see they
can come and meet with us.
