Web-based Resources for Enhancing the Numeracy of Biology Students

We have initiated an approach to improving the numeracy of Faculty of
Biomedical and Life Sciences students through web-based self-teaching facilities
powered by JavaScript, and which can be mounted on individual websites and on
Moodle. I shall describe the educational and technical rationale for adopting this
approach, and illustrate its application to a range of different numerical
problems in different biological subject areas, predominantly at level-2. I shall
present data on student usage and subsequent improvement in performance,
and discuss factors influencing its effectiveness.
