        Head of Department Factual Report Guidance Notes

                      For professorial progression / promotion

Professors with the requisite service are eligible to apply for professorial review on an
annual basis as follows:
    -    Professors in Band 1, above, at or below the Bar, may apply for promotion to Band
         2 or for accelerated increments within Band 1 (unless already at salary points 9 or
         10). Professors at the bar point may apply to 'cross' the bar.
    -    Professors in Band 2 may apply for a salary increase within their existing band or
         for promotion to Band 3.
    -    Professors in Band 3 may apply for a salary increase within their existing band.
    -    Heads of Department beginning, ending or extending their terms in 2012 will also
         be invited to submit documentation for professorial salary alignment depending
         upon current professorial grade.


If a professor has undergone a pay review since October in the preceding year outwith
usual procedures and timescales (eg for retention purposes) s/he will not be permitted to
apply again until the following year.


Professors have sole responsibility for originating applications. The decision on whether or
not a Professor should be progressed or promoted rests with the Professorial Pay Review
Panel.


Applicants are required to submit a copy of their application to their Head of Department
(or Academic Coordinator, if they are a Head of Department) by Friday 13 April 2012. The
Head of Department is then responsible for completing a Factual Report in consultation
with senior colleagues. The Factual Report should be returned to Gail Richmond
(gail.richmond@york.ac.uk) by Friday 1 June 2012.
