Owen J. Roberts
Music Parent Organization, Band Chapter
August 13, 2012
President: Stacy Martin called the meeting to order at 7:10PM in the band room. Thanking everyone for
attending, 19 people were present. A get well card was passed around for band president, Sara Gerhart as she
recovers from surgery due to an accident.
Vice President: No report
Secretary: July minutes were approved as presented (D. Mawson/C. Ficca/ B,Shimkonis)
Treasurer: Bernice Shimkonis reported on accounting for the month of July. Bernice reported that we are over
$1000 for ads for cavalcade program as of that day. The licenses for 50/50 and concessions were reviewed and
have been filed. Report was moved and approved. (K. Hankins/W. Dorfler)
Committee Chair Reports:
Rita’s: This annual fundraiser is August 22, at Pughtown location from 6 – 10.
Tailgate: Mark Centanni reported that it will be August 24th, volunteers were needed to help set up tables, in
concessions, at tables for uniform (E. Rosenwald volunteered her husband Mike), and an email will follow
requesting volunteers and donations by section. The program with chair people was updated and will be sent out
prior to the event. All Coke products were being requested so that we can continue to sell any leftovers without
storing “off brands” . Schedule was reviewed and the rain date would be the 30th. Mark also spoke about who
is in charge of the “Truck and Prop” committee. Paul Condrack has volunteered to chair this with Ted Evans
assistance. Props from Indoor Percussion were still remaining in the truck, Keith Hankins would handle
emptying this for the upcoming season.
Cavalcade: Chris Ficca annouced that we have 13 competing bands, and as of this date no college band, but we
were still awaiting word from Lebanon Valley. Sign up sheets for volunteering will be available at tailgate.
Cavalcade Program Ads: Section Leaders would be handing out paperwork for students to obtain ads for the
program and informing the students about the competition of sections. We are capable of earning $3,000 in
advertising, if every student secured an ad. There was discussion on reaching out to the community businesses
to come see a game and the cavalcade, and to network with events.
Fundraising: Keith Hankins spoke about getting concession assistance for the season, praised Kelly and Dave
McGrath for shadowing Trish Haverkamp for this season. Pretzel sales are being chaired by Elsa Rosenwald,
and we are still in need of volunteers to sell at the high school, timing is 1:45 until 2:30 on Wednesdays. We
will NOT be selling frozen pizzas, grocery gift cards or Wawa coupons. Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show
volunteer opportunities still open, the show is September 1-3, numerous people from the OJR community have
volunteered but more are needed. (Dine out nights are listed at bottom.)
Professional Staff Reports:
High School: Mr. Mengel was not available for the meeting due to band camp, no report.
Middle School: Jason Hess was not available for the meeting due to band camp, no report.
Elementary School: No report.
Indoor Percussion & Color Guard: No report.
Pasta: Penny Sallade has volunteered to head this endeavor, with assistance from Melody and Dave Schaff.
March 1st is the date, at Cedarville United Methodist Church, and planning has already started for this event.
Car Wash: September 9th from 9-2, will be a student ran, Car Wash/Bake Sale. Donations are needed for both
and an email will be following with requests. Patty Myers will be MPO and Color Guard representative, as
requested by Stacy Martin to assist with Baked Goods tent.
Meeting Date: Starting September 11th the meetings are moved to 2nd Tuesday night of the month to
accommodate a larger group of parents, and to also coincide with pickup from band practice. Meeting time will
change to 6:15, to allow for students to disperse to field. Room location is to be choir room.
Video/DVD: We are looking for someone/a group to shadow/replace Mark Dorfler as this will be his final
marching band season with OJR. There was some discussion on many people contributing pictures and video to
this, as it is great way to capture unscripted moments throughout band camp and the marching band season.
Facebook: *** NEW and Exciting news *** We now have a Facebook page for parents and students to
join/like, please look under OJR MPO. Keep up with us, to the minute as new and exciting things are
happening with YOUR band. All are encouraged to join the page. www.facebook.com/groups/OJR.MPO
New Business: A new MPO membership form has been created with volunteer positions listed for potential
involvement of a greater number of members.
*** September MPO meeting will be Tuesday, September 11th at 6:15 pm in High School Choir
