Dear Students and Parents,
The following pages should give you a clear understanding of the
content and expectations for students in the Intermediate
Theatre class. If there are any questions, you will find my
contact information at the end of this document. Please do not
hesitate to contact me.
The subject matter of the class takes students to a more sophisticated level of
communication, refining skills students acquired in Beginning Theatre.
The class is:
Project Based – students will read, write, discuss, and perform or present a project in every unit.
Group Oriented – a majority of the units are designed for pairs or small groups.
Linked to Production – students are required to participate in one production. The scope of their involvement will
be worked out on an individual basis. Students must at least attend and evaluate the other production.
Service Oriented – students will participate in class created projects/performances to bring to school and/or
community organizations. Students will participate in both DRAMA-THONs on September 21 and January 25.
The final project in the class is the Theatre Showcase on May 23-24. All students will be a part of the production
as an actor and/or a technician. This is the only after school requirement for the class.
Students may participate in the following activities after school for extra credit and to acquire CAR hours:
Remaining Fall/Spring Production
The amount of extra credit and process to receive it depends on the student’s choice of how to be involved. A list of dates
for these activities is available from the department.
MAJOR PERFORMANCE/PRESENTATION/TEST DAY
All due dates are assigned several days in advance.
No rescheduling will be done without an excused absence AND a parent phone call.
REHEARSAL DAY/GROUP WORK DAY
Student loses daily participation points AND rehearsal points.
Students who call or email by 8:00 a.m. on day of absence with explanation and length of absence will keep all
Elements of current projects may be assigned as homework and can include memorization, research, construction,
design, analysis, rehearsal, and/or gathering materials.
Some assignments are grades immediately.
Other assignments, such as memorization and character analysis, are turned in/graded with the final project.
Late homework loses 10% per day.
At least one opportunity is given per unit.
3 standard assignments are available anytime. See extra credit handout for more information.
The following supplies will be used on a daily basis:
Composition Book, Lg. Spiral Notebook, or Bound Journal
Pencils and Pens (standard colors)
Projects, progress checks, performances, and assignments will all be assigned a point value.
At the end of the grading period, points will be added and a letter grade will be issued based on the percentage of
overall points received:
o 100%-90% A
o 89%-80% B
o 79%-70% C
o 69%-60% D
o 59%-below F
Participation points and rehearsal/group points will be given at the end of each grading period.
Students who are struggling with any assignment or makeup work can receive assistance in one of the following ways:
Peer Tutoring – Advanced and IB students are available to tutor any struggling theatre student at lunch or after
school by appointment. Often only 1 or 2 sessions are needed for the struggling student to get the clarification
Teacher Tutoring – If peer tutoring fails, students can make appointments to meet with Mrs. De Lion at lunch.
Parent/Student/Teacher Conference – Often a conference can help to clarify expectations and misconceptions and
get things moving on the right track.
Students receive 10 participation points per week by following all classroom rules:
Students will maintain a positive attitude, be on time, and prepared for class.
Students will refrain from using personal items in class this includes but is not limited to makeup, playing cards,
cell phones, ipods, and food/drinks. Water is permissible.
Students will show respect for theatre facilities, seats, rehearsal spaces, and
Students lose points for the following infractions:
Tardy/Out of assigned seat
Unprepared for class
Using restricted personal items
Failure to clean rehearsal space
Uncooperative attitude/disrespectful of facilities
All major infractions will be handled according to school policy.
