									POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE                  SHYM LIVE-IN SUPPORT WORKER

REPORTING TO                    SHYM Supervisor
POSITION SUMMARY                This position shares superintendent and
                                support duties with the Respite Workers and
                                plays a key role in fulfilling SHYM’s mandate of
                                providing a safe, independent and supportive
                                living environment for single, vulnerable young
                                mothers and their children.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide emergency support to tenants (70% of time)

     Provide over-night and alternate weekend emergency, crisis intervention and
      problem-solving assistance as needed two weekends per month.
     Provide on-call emergency assistance by cell phone if necessary for two
      weekends per month
     Maintain written and verbal communication regarding emergency incidents

Provide a clean and safe living environment for tenants (30% of time)

     Clean and maintain common areas
     Promote and enforce building policies and tenant regulations
     Maintain written logs
     Provide support in administrative tasks as required by the SHYM Supervisor
     Occasionally shop for food supplies and prepare brunch or lunch with tenants


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 Minimum Formal Education: High School Leaving Certificate

 Special Knowledge and Skills:

     Certification in Non-violent crisis intervention, CPR and First Aid, or
       willingness to obtain same at the start of employment.
      Good communication skills to negotiate and enforce policies, provide
       encouragement to tenants and accurately maintain written logs.
      Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
      Ability to model healthy living and decision-making

 Nature and Amount of Minimum Experience:

      Experience caring for small children
      Experience acting in a supportive role
      Experience working with others from diverse cultural, social and economic
       backgrounds

KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Tenants and their children, program and respite staff,
Program Supervisor

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift small children (up to 40 lbs.) and be able
to perform cleaning duties.

POSITION DETAILS:

For working two alternate weekends per month (Friday 5pm – Sunday 9pm)
you will be provided with an unfurnished, one-bedroom apartment, at no cost to you
as form of payment. All utilities, including heat, and electricity are paid by SHYM. You
will also be provided with a cell phone for use during the weekends you are required
to work. Free parking is included. It is a non-smoking property.
