The Politics of the European Union’s Social
Level: 3 Credit Value: 20 Module Code: ACE3072
This module seeks to analyse the role and policy processes of the European Union in the field of
social issues and regional development policy. In particular, the module will examine the origins and
implementation of the Social Chapter, the European Development Fund and the European Social
Fund - and the way that these policy initiatives changed the outlook of the British political parties
towards EU institutions. Attention will also be paid to the criteria for the various funding objectives and
how these have changed over a period of time.
The course aims to
Introduce students to the role of the Social Dimension of the European Union.
Familiarise students with the relevance of the Social Dimension in determining the policies
of the Conservative and Labour parties.
To familiarise students with the European Union policy processes in determining Social
To encourage students to embark upon a limited form of independent study.
At the end of the course, students should be able to
Determine the extent of EU influence in the field of Social Policy
The structural framework in which national governments operate.
Describe the aims and objectives of the various policy strands within the EU.
