Institute of Directors Devon and Cornwall Branch
Report to the Annual Members’ Meeting for 2011
At 31 May 2011 there were 489 members of the IoD registered with the Branch.
Membership nationally has shrunk with the economy, but less so in the South West, and our
branch numbers have stabilised in recent months. Participation remains high; a testament to
your committee’s continuing efforts to bring new and relevant events on to the calendar and
in increasing numbers.
A total of 12 main visits, lunches, and evening meetings were organised throughout the
territory in 2009, split fairly evenly between Exeter, Plymouth and Cornwall. We have again
given our members privileged insights into organisations as diverse as the Navy (HMS
Albion), Flybe (the new Training Academy), Bott International in Bude, and the Eden Project.
We also learnt to fly fish at The Arundell Arms, and carried out some serious study at the
Devon Wine School. In addition we held six Thursday @6 free networking events.
For all these events we are grateful for the support of the host organisations whose
willingness to share their premises and thoughts is a testament to the regard in which the
Institute is held.
In the next year we are confident of having a full programme again with six main and four
Thursday @6 events already scheduled for the rest of 2011. The committee will always
welcome your ideas for speakers, visits or other events.
Full details will always be on the website (www.iod.com). You can update your contact
details on-line to make sure you receive all the information you need (and exclude the
information you don’t).
Training and Professional Development
The IoD is a strong supporter of entrepreneurial business at all levels. A key part of this is
helping aspiring individuals develop their professional skills through The Director
Development Programme lead by Exeter University and therefore available in the region.
Representation of Members’ Interests
Members of the committee and others regularly represent your interests on the Devon and
Cornwall Business Council, the Plymouth Area Business Council, the Exeter University
Business leaders Forum, and on the Stakeholder’s Group of the Plymouth Chamber of
Commerce and Industry. The formation of two LEPs in the territory during the year
absorbed a lot of time for your Chairman. The IoD will be specifically represented on the
advisory groups both in Cornwall and The Heart of the South West (Devon and Somerset).
