Channel 50 is looking for a student interested in becoming part
of the Channel 50 executive board for the 20009-2010 school
year. All are encouraged to apply regardless of past media
experience (CH50 or otherwise).
Channel 50 is an emerging television station run by and for
students at the University of Kentucky. It is broadcast on a closed
campus circuit to an audience of over 10,000 viewers. Channel
50 began in January 2006 as a movie channel before progressing
into a source for students to create and broadcast their own shows
and productions in 2007. With generous funding from WRFL,
Student Activities Board, Student Government, Resident Student
Association and the Office of Student Involvement, as well as a lot
of hard work and dedication from many UK students, Channel
50 has become a well-known presence on the UK campus, but
there is much more to be done.
As General Manager (GM) of this budding student organization it
will be your overall responsibility to better Channel 50. While
some film and broadcast work may be required, it must be
stressed that the main portion of this job is not devoted to
technical or “TV” work. This is mainly an administration job.

The position of General Manager entails a lot of work, time, and
effort. As a brand new organization this position is not clear-cut
and well-established, meaning that most of what you do will be
new. The GM must be innovative, flexible, and ready for a
challenge. This position will be very time consuming so it must
be advised that applicants remain very aware of their time
commitments to their studies and other organizations. As this job
will take so much time, the position does come with a small
salary (20 hours/week @ $7.50/hour).
We thank you for taking the initiative to get involved with
Channel 50. Because there can be only one applicant chosen for
the GM position, obviously all but one of those that apply will
not become GM. In light of this, please do not be discouraged.
Channel 50 has many openings for hard working and devoted
student leaders. If you are not selected, please continue to work
with Channel 50. It will take more than one strong leader to
build Channel 50 into what it can become.
GENERAL MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES
-Appoint new Executive Board positions and openings (with
consultation of Staff/Media Advisor).
-Delegate tasks to Executive Board and Committees.
-Schedule and run all CH50 Executive Board and general
-Reserve a weekly meeting time with Staff/Media Advisor.
-Hold regular meetings and workings with the University of
Kentucky’s many departments and staff members.
-Attend and participate in UK leadership programs
(Roundtable, Summit, Retreats, etc.)
-Maintain business relations with other Campus Organizations
and their leaders.
- Attend speaking engagements on behalf of Channel 50
(Advising sessions, UK101, classes, organizations’ meetings, etc.)
-Has a large say and responsibility in the censorship of
materials and conduct of CH50 onscreen talents/material.
-Secure funding from different sources.
-Delegate and appropriate Channel 50 funds.
-Ensure proper equipment use and check-out.
-Maintain the moral integrity of Channel 50 via funding,
appropriation, affiliates, and own content.
-Maintain general day-to-day business of Channel 50.
-Generally set the tone and ambitions of the entire Channel
