General
These guidance notes are for use with the “On-Course Excellence Scholarship
Application Form” (available to download from www.edgehill.ac.uk/scholarships).
The information provided by you will be used to consider your application for an
Excellence Scholarship. This information will be made available to the panel of the
Selection Committee for which your application belongs (Sport, Performing Arts, Creative
Arts or Volunteering).
You are eligible to apply for as many Scholarships as you like if you have an interest in
more than one area of excellence, but you may only be awarded one scholarship. You
must fill in one application form for each scholarship you are applying for - simply
photocopy this form if you are planning on applying for several scholarships.
Alternatively, visit the scholarships website to print additional copies.
1 STUDENT NUMBER
The number featured on your UNI Card.
2 TITLE
Please give the title you usually use. Do not leave this field blank.
3 FIRST NAME
Please provide all of your given names in the order that they appear on official
documents. Initials are insufficient.
4 SURNAME (family name)
This is the name that your application will be filed under and the name you should use on
any future correspondence with us.
5 DATE OF BIRTH
Your correct date of birth allows easy identification of your student record should
someone have the same name as you.
6 COURSE TITLE
Please provide the full title of the course you are studying on.
7 WHAT YEAR OF STUDY ARE YOU CURRENTLY IN?
Please indicate if you are in your first or second year of study (final year students are not
eligible to apply).
8 HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS?
Please indicate how you heard about the Excellence Scholarships scheme.

9 PERSONAL STATEMENT
This is the most important section of your application and will form the basis on which
your application will be considered. This is an opportunity to sell yourself to the Selection
Committee and tell us about your interests/achievements in the area of excellence you
are applying for, your future plans and how a scholarship would benefit you.
IMPORTANT: On-Course Excellence Scholarships are awarded for achievement within
the academic year, you can mention successes you’ve had in the past but your
application will be judged on your achievements within the academic year 2011/2012.
Remember to be honest and specific – do not provide information which is irrelevant.
Providing good evidence to back up your achievements is essential if you wish your
application to be strongly considered. For example, if you describe winning sports
competitions, taking part in productions, volunteering for organisations etc. you should
provide photocopies of certificates and official letters to back this up.
Please note that large / fragile artwork cannot be accepted and work submitted will not be
returned (unless you specifically request this), therefore, photographs of your artwork
would be preferable. Footage of films or performances must be in a format that is
compatible with a DVD player. Digital works submitted in any other format will not be
accepted by the selection panel.
The Excellence Scholarships website (www.edgehill.ac.uk/scholarships) provides
information regarding what the selection panels are looking for in a good application.
Applicants are advised to check this before writing their statement.

SUPPORTING EVIDENCE
It is essential that you provide a) references and b) supporting evidence to corroborate
the achievements detailed in the previous section. If your application is not accompanied
by supporting information it will not be considered by the panel.
10 SUPPORTING INFORMATION- References
In this section you should provide at least one letter of support from someone who can
act as a referee for the achievements you have detailed in Sections 2-6. Referees must
have authority in the relevant field (i.e. a teacher or mentor). The letter from your referee
should explain, in a few paragraphs, why they think you would benefit from or merit an
Excellence Scholarship.
