       Gilman Program Overview

      The Gilman International Scholarship Program diversifies the
       kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and
                         regions where they go.




      The Gilman Program supports undergraduates who have high
       financial need and awards scholarships of up to $5,000 for
               study abroad for up to one academic year.

Critical Need Language Supplement
   Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to
   study abroad are eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical
   Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a
   total possible award of up to $8,000.


   Applicants who are studying a “critical need language” while
   abroad will automatically be considered for the “Critical Need
   Language Supplement” award.

  • Arabic (all dialects)
  • Chinese (all dialects)
  • Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen,
    Uzbek)
  • Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki)
  • Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi,
    Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi)
  • Korean
  • Russian

                             How to Apply:

  • The Gilman Scholarship Application is only available online.
    Review application instructions and verify eligibility on the
    website at www.iie.org/gilman.

  • There are four components to the Gilman Scholarship
    Application:
             1. Online student section;
             2. Online study abroad advisor certification;
             3. Online financial aid advisor certification; and
             4. Three paper copies of the student's transcript(s).

  • Consult the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on
    the Gilman website for more information.

             What goes into the application?
  • Statement of Purpose Essay
      – Address the impact that your study abroad program will have on
        your academic, professional, and personal goals.
      – Also address the impact that receiving the Gilman Scholarship
        would have on your achievement of these goals.

  • Follow-On Service Project Proposal
      – All Gilman Scholars are required to carry out a follow-on project
        upon their return from abroad that helps to promote international
        education and the Gilman International Scholarship.
      – This can be done on your home campus or in your local
        community and must be completed within six months of your
        return home.
      – Be mindful of:
           • Target audience and message
           • Method of presenting

                Statement of Purpose Content
  •   No more than 7,000 characters (including spaces)
  •   Why do you wish to study abroad and what factors led you to this decision? What do
      you hope to gain from and what do you anticipate will be the impact of your
      experience abroad?
  •   Describe your study abroad program. What factors led you to select this program and
      length of study?
  •   Why have you chosen your country of study? What factors led you to select this
      country?
  •   How will this study abroad program and the coursework you take abroad impact your
      academic, career, and future professional goals?
  •   Are there any distinctive components to this program, beyond coursework, that will
      impact your overall learning experience abroad? (i.e. home-stays, internships, field
      research, volunteer activities, extra-curricular activities, etc.)
  •   What challenges, if any, did you face in your decision to study abroad? How did you
      meet these challenges and what impact do you foresee them having on your
      experience abroad? These could include, but are not limited to, being a parent, being
      a non-traditional student, having a learning or physical disability, being in a field of
      study for which it is difficult to incorporate study abroad, etc.

    What makes an application competitive?
  • Meet many of the preference factors, especially country of
    destination.

  • If studying in a traditional location, student should pay particular
    attention to addressing why the location is critical to their goals.

  • Have well-written, coherent, thoughtful and proofread essays that
    address all questions.

  • Essays should address the impact that their study abroad program
    will have on the student's academic, professional and personal
    goals.

  • Have well-developed, creative, and achievable follow-on project
    statements.

• Oct. 1st (campus deadline) for Spring programs.

• Feb. 21st for Fall and Academic Year Programs. If you want
  help with your personal statements you must meet with
  Consuelo Clemens with a good draft of your statements,
  before this date. If you plan to apply please email

• March 1st (national deadline) for Fall and Academic Year
  programs (if you’re not seeking on-campus help)

           Study Abroad Fear Factors
• Even if I get the Gilman, studying abroad too
  expensive – don’t only rich kids do it??
• It doesn’t represent my cultural relevance, heritage
  or interests.
• I don’t know anyone who has studied abroad
• I’m the first generation to attend college and I
  worked hard to even get here – why should go
  abroad, too?

• In addition to the Gilman, you can use regular
  financial aid and there are other special grants and
  scholarships available!
• You’ll work closely with an advisor who will help you
  find a program that best fits your needs and
  interests.
• It doesn’t have to delay graduation – you can
  frequently take degree requirements abroad.

• Employers love to see that you have international
  experience!
• Our main goal is your safety and success abroad –

• You can study abroad almost anywhere – we’ll
  work with you to find a great program that fits your
  needs and interests.
• UW-Parkside sponsors semester and a year-long
  programs in over 20 countries.
• If none of the UWP programs interest you, you can
  do a non-UW-P program.
• You don’t just have to study abroad – you can also
  do an international internship!
