I. Private Lesson Policies
1.1. Key to Registration for Private Piano Lessons
MUSPERF 101: Music Education, Composition /Technology, Music Theatre,
Instrumental/Vocal Performance, Music History and Literature - 1cr.
1.2 Course Outline
Piano study will include sight-reading, technical routine, coordination skills
and repertoire as required by your major. The choice of repertoire, based on
the student’s ability, is determined by the studio teacher.
We have all been taught by “hands-on” teachers and teaching in the studio
will include physical demonstrations. Any physical contact between student
and teacher is strictly for the purpose of teaching the art and physical aspects
of piano playing. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable with any aspect of
the lesson please feel free to voice this to your studio teacher.
1.3 Lessons and Materials
Students are entitled to one/half hour weekly lessons per semester.
For the lesson, the student shall provide:
* A notebook in which you record technical exercises, principles of piano
skills, a log of daily sight-reading, musical ideas, and weekly assignments.
*A cassette tape to record each lesson to use as a reference for practice
during the week. (Optional - discuss this with your teacher.)
*Students must have the scores of the repertoire they are studying.
Xerox copies are illegal. Music can be purchased online:
sheetmusic1.com
primamusic.com
1.4 Lesson Schedule
Private lessons schedule is to be arranged with your teacher.
1.5 Attendance

Unexcused absences: An unexcused absence is defined as any absence without
the instructor’s prior knowledge. Promptness for all lessons and master
classes is expected. Arriving ten minutes or more after scheduled lesson or
class is considered an unexcused absence. Illness called in shortly before a
lesson forfeits the lesson. Students are not excused for a doctor’s
appointment. Lessons are not made up for a doctor’s appointment unless
illness is of a grave nature. Do not make any appointments that conflict with
lesson or class times.
1.6 Only four situations will be considered as possible excused absences:
2
Absences will be excused only for illness of sufficient gravity to require
the care of a doctor.
Family distress in the immediate family defined as spouse, parents,
grandparents, brother or sister.
An officially sanctioned UWM trip or event
Observance of religious holidays Unexcused absences will result in a
lowered grade following these guidelines:
st
* 1 unexcused absence = ½ letter grade lowered
* 3 unexcused absences = will result in an F for the semester
* Lessons/classes missed by the teacher, as well as excused absences will
be rescheduled.
* The teacher or student is not obligated to wait longer than 10 minutes
for lessons or classes if either party is late. Late faculty exacts a make -
up lesson. Late students forfeit lesson.

the first 6 weeks of the next semester.
Mid-Term Jury: A mid-term jury will take place at the EIGHTH lesson
of the semester. Your studio teacher will determine what will be played
for the mid-term and will let you know by the SIXTH lesson.
Final Jury: Each student is expected to play technical studies and one piece
(memory not required), and any functional piano skills required by your
major, during the last lesson of the semester. A technique exam consisting of
work covered during the semester will also be given at your last lesson of the
semester.
4.2 Piano Lesson Grading
The final semester grade is determined by the studio teacher, based on:
Attendance/attitude: 35%
Practice of assigned material (repertoire/ technique): 35%
Mid-term: 20%
Final jury: 10%
4.3 Minimum Grade/Probation
An average grade of ‘C’ (77-79) in piano study must be achieved by the end
of the first year at UWM and maintained thereafter or the student will be
placed on probation. Students who do not show marked improvement and
progress in both piano and academic courses during the semester of
probation will be removed from the piano program.
V. CHANGING STUDIO TEACHERS
To effect a change, the following steps must be taken in sequence:
5.1 Student informs present teacher in person and in writing of the desire
to change teachers.
5.2 Teacher brings the matter to piano area.
5.3 Student will be notified.
4
VI. CONTINUING AND OUTSIDE STUDY
6.1 Continuing study:
Any student who has completed his/her requirements in piano and who wishes to
continue private study through the University may do so only with the approval of
the Piano area and the Chair of the Department of Music.
6.2 Outside Study
Because piano instruction is very individual, students are NOT allowed to study
with an outside piano teacher concurrently with their UWM teacher. Students who
wish to study during the summer with a non-UWM teacher may do so only with
permission from their teacher.
VII. THEORY
Success in the theory program is very important to your growth as a musician.
We will monitor your progress and grades to help to insure your development and
success. If your theory level drops one year below that of your piano level, you will
not be allowed to continue piano lessons until the theory level has again become
commensurate with that of your performance level.
