Background on Skills Development
The growth of the Indian economy in the recent past led to a surge in demand for skilled and
educated workers and the compulsion to sustain it is also forcing the Indian government to
accelerate the process of developing all the branches of the Indian education system.

One of the weaknesses of Indian education system is that it does not gives due importance to
vocational education. As a result there is a mismatch between the skilled manpower required
and skilled manpower available. People are obsessed with attaining a graduation degree and
generally look down upon vocational education. This has resulted in a situation where on the
one hand there are scores of unemployed graduates and on the other hand there is a huge
shortage of skilled workers such as plumbers, electricians etc.

USA has a well developed skill development programme through the community college
concept, can India learn from American experience and develop Indian initiatives to reap the
full benefits of the so called demographic dividend.

To address some of these key issues IACC Indo US Education forum & NHRD is
organising a one day International Summit on “Skills Development: American
Experience – Indian Initiatives”, in Bangalore .
