3. Machiavelli asks “whether it be better to be beloved than feared, or to be feared than
beloved”. He continues; “it will naturally be answered that it would be desirable to be
both the one and the other, but…. it is much more safe to be feared than to be loved when
you have to choose between the two”. (Page 82)

   pledges when their observance is contrary to his interest”. (Page 86)

   a. Explain what you believe Machiavelli means by this statement.




5. Machiavelli has been interpreted by many to support the concept of “the ends
justifying the means”. (To be “Machiavellian” is to practice this concept)

   a. Explain what “Ends Justify the Means” suggests about what political leaders
