Efficient orbital welding
New system control ensures higher quality and efficiency
(29/12/2008) Orbital welding is the preferred method for making high-quality
metal pipe joints or connections. It does, however, require a great deal of
skill and a polished technique. The Fronius FPA 2030 AC/DC orbital welding
system has both. Its integrated knowledge base and control technology gives
users a high degree of process reliability, resulting in low-cost, automated
welding processes and short production times. It also has a great many uses on
construction sites and can be used for manual welding.
In orbital welding, the torch circles around the fixed component. As components
generally need to be joined both horizontally and vertically, the welding
positions encountered during operation can be just about anywhere. To be able to
reproduce joints of the highest quality, the welder needs a system with
intelligent software control and a practical user interface.
The new FPA 2030 is a completely digitised, microprocessor-controlled system
control for orbital welding. It is equipped with an active power source manager
coupled with a digital signal processor. The system reacts to changes in real
time. This gives the welding process an unrivalled degree of precision, with
exactly reproducible results and superb weld properties. Intuitive operation via
a touch screen with graphical process visualisation ensures the quick and safe
control of work processes. The welder can see all key functions at a glance and
adjust them accordingly.
The FPA 2030 supports all Fronius TIG (tungsten inert gas) TransTig/MagicWave
2500 and 3000 digital power sources. This allows the user to program and control
the following six welding parameters: protective gas shield, welding current,
rotational movement of the welding head, wire parameters, AVC (torch distance
control) and OSC parameters (torch oscillation). For optimum user comfort, the
system control can be installed above the power source on the pickup trolley.
The front panel serves to physically protect the control panel and printer when
closed. When open, it doubles up as an anti-glare screen for the touchscreen
display. A remote control makes the user experience even more straightforward.
It has all the functions necessary for controlling orbital welding on site,
while a range of additional features make it a very flexible tool. In addition
to the many orbital welding guns available for a wide range of applications, the
FPA 2030 also supports manual welding torches. It also boasts extraordinary all-
round properties. Thanks to the optimum ignition sequence, it can be used on
unalloyed and low-alloy steels as well as high-alloy, chrome-nickel steels.
During TIG AC welding, the FPA 2030 takes the present electrode temperature into
account as well as the electrode diameter. As the AC frequencies can be modified
to accommodate a very wide range of requirements, it is also extremely well
suited to welding aluminium and its alloys, copper alloys, magnesium and
