									                      SUPPLEMENTAL LEARNING PRACTICE JAM

TOPIC: Timed Writing

APPLICABLE COURSES: All courses requiring in-class, timed essay writing

LEARNING OUTCOMES: (What will students be able to do by the end of the workshop?)

 List five steps involved in completing timed writing assignments successfully
 Apply three steps to outline sample essay questions

CONTENT: (What do students need to know to accomplish the outcome?)

Five steps for completing a timed writing activity: (1) Plan your time; (2) identify all parts of the
question; (3) create an outline that includes a thesis statement and supporting points that are
based on the question segments; (4) write the essay; (5) proofread and edit.

METHOD: (How will the tutor deliver content? Short lecture, handouts, Power point, other
audio-visual presentation)

Tutor will review the 5 steps for completing a timed writing using the SL workbook. Then tutor
will display a sample essay question on the overhead screen and explain how to analyze the parts
of the question in order to determine a thesis and an outline for the timed essay.

ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES: (How will students apply their knowledge? Solve a
problem, create a project, analyze a case, explain a process)

Students will use the suggestions presented in the lecture to annotate several sample timed-
writing prompts and create outlines for three essay prompts.

ASSESSMENT METHOD: (How will the tutor know that the student met the objectives?)

Tutor will circulate and give feedback.

SELF REFLECTION ACTIVITY: (What will the tutor do to get students to reflect on how
they learned the content? What they have learned, how they learned it, and how they will apply it
in their coursework)

Students will write a brief self-reflection on how they can apply the workshop material in their
courses.

STEP 4: Write your essay. Use a separate paragraph for each main point in your
outline, and provide a clear transition for each point. Support each point with
specific, relevant evidence from the material you have studied.

STEP 5: Proofread and edit your essay for content and sentence errors.

Remember the two tips offered in the slide presentation:

 Before the test, know the material well (your text and lecture notes).
 Know what your instructor expects from you.
                       TIMED WRITING PROMPTS

Directions: For the writing prompts at the bottom of this page,
complete the following activities.

  1. With pen or pencil, number the parts of each prompt and underline and/or
circle the verbs and other key words that indicate what you need to do.
Do this for all three prompts.

  2. On a separate sheet of paper, outline a response to the three prompts.
Be sure to apply the first three steps to success as you work! In a
real writing situation you would apply all five steps.

  Writing Prompts:
  (a) In the last decade, America has seen an increase in the number of stay-at-
home dads. Identify two causes (such as economic or social) that have
contributed to this increase. Describe one positive effect on the family as a
result of this phenomenon. Explain one adjustment that a husband and wife
may have to make to cope with this new family model.

  (b) Some say that the American Dream is actually a myth that Americans
spend their time chasing but will never actually reach. Define the American
Dream. Then state whether you agree or disagree with the statement that the
American Dream is an unachievable myth. Provide examples or reasons to
      support your opinion.

  (c) Online education has become increasingly popular with college students.
Although some say that it is beneficial for students, others argue that it is
not the most effective way to learn. Identify at least two advantages of
online education and two disadvantages of the system. Then discuss
whether you think College of the Canyons should offer fewer or more
online classes. Give reasons for your opinion.
SELF-REFLECTION

In a brief paragraph (100 to 150 words), describe one technique you
have learned from today’s activity, and discuss how this technique will
help you outline a timed writing essay in a class you are currently
taking.
                              Practice Jam Sample Answer Key

Note: These are possible thesis statements and outlines. They may go into greater depth
than student outlines will. Use these samples as a guide when working with students.

(a) In the last decade, America has seen an increase in the number of stay-at-home dads.
         1
Identify two causes (such as economic or social) that have contributed to this increase.
         2
Describe one positive effect on the family that occurs as a result of this phenomenon.
         3
Explain one adjustment that a husband and wife may have to make to cope with this
         new family model.

Thesis:
America has more stay-at-home dads in current society because of greater opportunities for
women and less rigid gender roles for men, and although some adjustments must be made, this
has had a positive effect on the family.

      I. Causes
             A. Greater opportunities for women
                        1. Women are provided more opportunities for higher paying positions in

                        2. Increasingly numbers are making it more common and therefore more
                           acceptable.

             A. Children see positive role models of nurturing fathers and corporate mothers and
so are more accepting of less rigid gender roles
             B. Husbands and wives have more flexibility in managing a household and family

(b) Some say that the American Dream is actually a myth that Americans spend their time
chasing but will never actually reach. 1Define the American Dream. Then 2state whether
you 2agree or disagree with the statement that the American Dream is an unachievable
myth. 3Provide examples or reasons to support your opinion

(c) Online education has become increasingly popular with college students. Although some
say that it is beneficial for students, others argue that it is not the most effective way to
provide education. 1Identify at least two advantages of online education and two
disadvantages of the system. Then 2discuss whether you think College of the Canyons
should offer fewer or more online classes. Give reasons for your opinion.

Thesis:
Online education has advantages and disadvantages, but overall it is effective education, and
College of the Canyons should increase the number or online courses offered.

             A. Flexibility
                      1. Students can complete assignments when it is convenient such as after

             C. Accessibility (optional)
                      1. Students without transportation, with disabilities, with children can still

                            response
             B. A sense of isolation
                        1. Class in conducted in silence without seeing or hearing other students.

III. COC should offer more online classes.
             A. Student needs and desires should be considered, and students want online classes.
             B. Although students do not have immediate access to the instructor, they can depend
on other resources such as classmates, or online sites which may help them to
                become more independent.
