SUPPLEMENTAL LEARNING PRACTICE JAM TOPIC: Timed Writing APPLICABLE COURSES: All courses requiring in-class, timed essay writing LEARNING OUTCOMES: (What will students be able to do by the end of the workshop?) List five steps involved in completing timed writing assignments successfully Apply three steps to outline sample essay questions CONTENT: (What do students need to know to accomplish the outcome?) Five steps for completing a timed writing activity: (1) Plan your time; (2) identify all parts of the question; (3) create an outline that includes a thesis statement and supporting points that are based on the question segments; (4) write the essay; (5) proofread and edit. METHOD: (How will the tutor deliver content? Short lecture, handouts, Power point, other audio-visual presentation) Tutor will review the 5 steps for completing a timed writing using the SL workbook. Then tutor will display a sample essay question on the overhead screen and explain how to analyze the parts of the question in order to determine a thesis and an outline for the timed essay. ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES: (How will students apply their knowledge? Solve a problem, create a project, analyze a case, explain a process) Students will use the suggestions presented in the lecture to annotate several sample timed- writing prompts and create outlines for three essay prompts. ASSESSMENT METHOD: (How will the tutor know that the student met the objectives?) Tutor will circulate and give feedback. SELF REFLECTION ACTIVITY: (What will the tutor do to get students to reflect on how they learned the content? What they have learned, how they learned it, and how they will apply it in their coursework) Students will write a brief self-reflection on how they can apply the workshop material in their courses. Sample Writing Prompt for tutor to review with students on overhead: 1 2 Identify two strategies that advertisers use to sell products and describe the intended effect of each strategy. Support each point with specific, relevant evidence from the material you have studied. STEP 5: Proofread and edit your essay for content and sentence errors. Remember the two tips offered in the slide presentation: Before the test, know the material well (your text and lecture notes). Know what your instructor expects from you. TIMED WRITING PROMPTS Directions: For the writing prompts at the bottom of this page, complete the following activities. 1. With pen or pencil, number the parts of each prompt and underline and/or circle the verbs and other key words that indicate what you need to do. Do this for all three prompts. 2. On a separate sheet of paper, outline a response to the three prompts. Be sure to apply the first three steps to success as you work! In a real writing situation you would apply all five steps. Writing Prompts: (a) In the last decade, America has seen an increase in the number of stay-at- home dads. Identify two causes (such as economic or social) that have contributed to this increase. Describe one positive effect on the family as a result of this phenomenon. Explain one adjustment that a husband and wife may have to make to cope with this new family model. (b) Some say that the American Dream is actually a myth that Americans spend their time chasing but will never actually reach. Define the American Dream. Then state whether you agree or disagree with the statement that the American Dream is an unachievable myth. Provide examples or reasons to support your opinion. (c) Online education has become increasingly popular with college students. Although some say that it is beneficial for students, others argue that it is not the most effective way to learn. Identify at least two advantages of online education and two disadvantages of the system. Then discuss whether you think College of the Canyons should offer fewer or more online classes. Give reasons for your opinion. SELF-REFLECTION In a brief paragraph (100 to 150 words), describe one technique you have learned from today’s activity, and discuss how this technique will help you outline a timed writing essay in a class you are currently taking. Practice Jam Sample Answer Key Note: These are possible thesis statements and outlines. They may go into greater depth than student outlines will. Use these samples as a guide when working with students. Children see positive role models of nurturing fathers and corporate mothers and so are more accepting of less rigid gender roles B. Husbands and wives have more flexibility in managing a household and family III. Adjustment A. If a man did not voluntarily leave his job, he may feel ashamed or resentful about being at home B. Students who normally are shy to speak in a classroom setting can comfortably participate in discussion board conversations. C. Accessibility (optional) 1. Students without transportation, with disabilities, with children can still complete classes toward their degree II. Disadvantages A. No real time communication 1. If students have a question, they must email the instructor and wait for a response B. A sense of isolation 1. Class in conducted in silence without seeing or hearing other students. May be more difficult to create a community. III. COC should offer more online classes. A. Student needs and desires should be considered, and students want online classes. B. Although students do not have immediate access to the instructor, they can depend on other resources such as classmates, or online sites which may help them to become more independent.
