UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT POLICY To achieve the University of Plymouth’s objectives relating to Corporate Social Responsibility, the Procurement Policy identifies a Strategic Objective to embed sound ethical, social and environmental policies within the University’s procurement function. The development of the Sustainable Procurement Policy and consequent Strategy is to ensure that the University carries out its procurement activities in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The University will therefore strive to achieve the following: It will work with its staff and students to: Reduce the demand for goods and services required by cutting down on waste and the re-use and recycling of existing goods Use the least environmentally damaging goods and services and promote the use of Fairtrade goods Ensure that whole life costs, environmental and social impacts are taken into consideration in the assessment of value for money Raise awareness of the requirement to embed environmental and social considerations and assessment in the procurement cycle Develop good practice at the University through appropriate networks, benchmarking and training It will work with its suppliers to: Promote awareness of the University’s sustainability objectives in the supply market Encourage suppliers to adopt sustainable approaches in their production of goods and services and within their own supply chains Improve their performance in relation to sustainability objectives Address barriers to entry so that SMEs and local suppliers are encouraged to bid for appropriate contracts The Sustainable Procurement Policy applies to all University expenditure, regardless of the source of funds. The Head of Procurement will be responsible to the University Secretary for the implementation of this Policy, through the Sustainable Procurement Strategy and Action Plan, reporting annually to the University’s Audit Committee.
