     2010 A Message from the President -
Hello again everybody. WOW, where did summer and fall go? It has gotten downright cold
Ocean City right quick here in OC. BRRRRRRR!!! That being said, lets get down to business.
 Marlin Club
Even though it is the ―off season‖ now, things are still plugging away at the club. We had
Officers some incredible parties at the club recently. The highlight of which, in my opinion, was the 1st
Annual White Marlin Party. This get together was Billy Regan’s idea, and what a great idea it
was. We came together as a fishing club to celebrate everyone that showed their skills at
Franky Pettolina catching White Marlin this summer, and the turnout was spectacular. It was truly the
     President
―fishiest‖ event we have ever had at the club and ideas are already floating around on how to
Mark Radcliffe make it even better next year (although I am not sure that is possible!!). Following the White
Vice President Marlin Party was the Seasonal Awards banquet. Again, this was an awesome event, culminat-
ing with some very special recognition awards. There were 2 awards given in memoriam of
 Annette Cropper
Secretary our dear friend Jimmy Jackson who passed away very unexpectedly this past year. Jake Em-
che received the special recognition award for showing exceptional promise in the cockpit.
Brian Tinkler Jake is relatively ―new‖ to the game but he has come blazing out of the gates and I expect
    Treasurer
some really huge things out of him in the future. As a side note, I would like to thank the Har-
man family for donating this award in memory of Jimmy. The second award, the Jimmy Jack-
son Memorial Trophy, was given to John Prather for being the mate on the Top Overall Boat
BOARD (The Billfisher) this year. There will be a perpetual trophy at the club which will have each
OF year’s recipient of this honor recognized on it. Jimmy’s parents as well as his close friend PJ
DIRECTORS Aldridge presented these awards, and it was a truly moving moment to say the least. The final
special recognition award of the night was the Edna Hodgens Award for Outstanding Service
 N. Dave Birkett to The Marlin Club. This year the award was presented to John Sippel. John has served on
Ron Callis the Board of Directors for many years and is the driving force behind the elevator project. Be-
lieve me when I say that the elevator would not be becoming a reality if it wasn’t for John.
James Jefferson And of course I would be remiss if I did not say congratulations to all of the award winners for
2010. It was a record setting year, and it was a privilege to be a part of it.
    Val Lynch

James Giles On the morning of the Seasonal Awards we held our final fishing committee meeting for 2010.
The Committee set the dates for the 2011 season and tournaments and came up with some
    Bill Regan
ideas to make our fishing year even more exciting. There are a few new awards that are going
John Sippel to be given next year. To start with, longtime member Charles Kratz has provided for an
award to be given to the first junior angler that catches a white marlin each season. This will
9659 Golf Course Rd be a trophy as well as a monetary prize. In addition to this, each junior angler to catch their
  Ocean City, MD
21842 first ever white marlin will receive a recognition award from Charles. Another new award will
be a prize for the angler that catches the FINAL white marlin of the season. Hopefully this

gives anglers the incentive to fish those final days of the fishing year and make sure to fill out
catch reports. The committee also decided to move the final fishing day of the 2011 season
back to the first Sunday of October. One final note about the Fishing Committee is that long-
time chair Pat Svehla has decided to step down from that position. Pat has earned this well
deserved ―retirement‖ but he has assured me that he will still serve on the committee and help
where needed. Pat’s replacement is Mark Thomasson. ―Big‖ Mark has served on the commit-
tee for several years and has worked along side Sharon Rittmeyer as weigh-master at the
scales for the Club tournaments. I am excited to work with Mark on this committee, and I
know he will do an incredible job. And of course, thank you Pat for all of the work you have
done.

Talking about fishing--be sure to check out the current issues of Marlin Magazine and In The
Bite to see the great press OC is getting. It is nice to see our little town get the recognition it
deserves as the true, one and only, WHITE MARLIN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!!!

The election of the 2011 BOD and Officers has also come to pass. I am happy to say that all
of the incumbents were voted back in. Not that there were any undeserving candidates on the
ballot, but I feel that we have the most cohesive group that I have worked with over the past
11 years, and I look forward to another great year in 2011.

The November Monthly dinner was held this past weekend at the club. There was a great
turnout, and of course the food and decorations were phenomenal. Dee and the Auxiliary, as
well as Shirley, Mike and the rest of our staff put on a great show once again. Great work eve-
rybody!!

Next on the list are the Christmas and New Years parties. Both of these events will sell out, so
be sure to get your tickets early.

Until next time, be sure to come by the club and check out the progress on the elevator, try to
stay warm, and if you happen to be somewhere warm catching fish send us the pics!!

This is another one of those positively delightful moments in Marlin Club history that
warrants a lofty spread in the monthly Marlin Bill newsletter...
Harry Rodgers, III was very passionate about fishing. Harry fished the very first White
Marlin Open which took place in 1974. During that year, alongside Captain Howard
―Sonny‖ Eslinger & then Mate Dave Fisher & former President of Tidewater Insurance
Associates, Inc. aboard the ―Finest Kind,‖ a brand new 44’ Striker, Harry Rodgers, III was
the Billfish Points winner with 231.5 points during the very first White Marlin Open
(directed then & to this day by Jim Motsko). They boated four fish at an average of 57
pounds a piece off the tip of the Washington Canyon using squid as bait in 12’-15’ seas.
Dave Fisher explained that they fished in such bad weather because they were neck and
neck with Buster Day, owner of the ―Seven Days,‖ and it proved to pay off as they ended
up being the winning team.

According to Jim Motsko, ―the Top Angler/Billfish Points Winner (Harry Rodgers III) in
1974 was for the most billfish landed. This was the first tournament in Ocean City that
posted guaranteed prize money and not just calcutta money. This was the start of what is
known as the White Marlin Open today! It showed that a fishing tournament is more angler
friendly by offering guaranteed prize money in addition to calcuttas making it a more
economical way to fish.‖

Harry Rodgers, III is one of those magnanimous few—courageously noble in mind & heart
as the definition of the word states. He and his wife Bobby, a real ―1st class lady‖ as
described by his life-long friend Jim Whaley, have five children; Harry has fished all over
the world and made his fortune starting a small business from scratch and making it into
something world-renown. Jim Whaley explained to us that if you met Harry ―you wouldn’t
have known he had two nickels to rub together.‖

Harry Rodgers, III was the founder of the once small business named Tidewater Insurance
Associates, Inc.. Around the 1960’s, he also started buying property around a small airport
named Friendship Airport. Friendship Airport was on 3, 300 acres of land in Anne Arundel
County, MD just south of Baltimore City and is now known to all as B.W.I./Thurgood
Marshall Airport. As you can see Harry Rodgers III is a man of action, a doer if you will.

Mate Dave Fisher, Angler Harry Rodgers,
III, & Captain Howard “Sonny” Eslinger of
the “Finest Kind” receiving the first guar-

Points Winner during the first White Marlin
