Enterprise Document Management System (EDMS)
Technical Information for EDMS Users
How Can I Prepare to Use the EDMS?
First, you and your local Technical Support person (many times, your LAN Coordinator) can make sure that your system
is set up to work with the EDMS. If your computer system is fairly new, and you have kept your browser versions up-
to-date, you may only need to confirm a few settings within your browser preferences. Here are the requirements:
Your Computer: Your RAM must be at least 64MB but 128MB is much preferable, to print reports. Hint:
To reserve the most space possible for viewing and printing your reports, go to the EDMS
right after logging onto your computer, before opening other software, or clear your Disk
and Memory Cache just before logging into the EDMS.
The EDMS technology works well with PCs.
MAC requirements are the same as the PeopleSoft standard announced two years
ago: G3 MAC, or higher/newer. Even so, “native” MACs may not provide full printing
functionality, without using the EDMS from within an emulation environment such as
“Virtual PC” for Macintosh. Talk with your Technical Coordinator to determine your
best option. We will continue to explore solutions, and provide updates at this site.
Your Printer: Your computer will need to be defined to a local or networked (LAN) printer, if you expect
to print reports.
Your Browser: Use Netscape 4.51 or Internet Explorer 4.01 (minimum version levels).
Your EDMS You must have a “Mobius” plug-in, to print from the EDMS. The first time that you use a
Printer Plug-in: browser for EDMS, you will automatically receive a screen message similar to this:
“HTTPS://SERVERNAME.OIT.UMN.EDU/DDRINT/WORK/DDdiPRINTControl.cab” signed on
2/3/00 12:46pm and distributed by Mobius Management Systems, Inc. Publisher authenticity
verified by VeriSign Commercial Software Publishers CA.”
Respond in the affirmative, by clicking on “YES” or “Continue”, depending on which
browser you are using at the time. This is very important. If you do not respond in the
affirmative, you may have to re-install that particular browser before using the EDMS.
Your Browser Settings: In “Edit, Preferences” (Netscape)
In “Navigator”, History expiration must be set to 1 day
In “Advanced”, Enable Cookies Which Get Sent Back to the Originating Server
In “Advanced, Cache” settings should be set to a minimum of:
Memory Cache 1024
Disk Cache 2048
Note: Clear your Memory Cache and your Disk Cache at the end of each session.
In “Tools, Internet Options” (Internet Explorer)
In “General”, History expiration must be set to 1 day
Browser References: Even if you are an inexperienced browser user, there is plenty of excellent information to
help you learn quickly. A good source of information can be found at the University’s
Management Reporting Web site: www.umreports.umn.edu .
Log into this site using your Internet ID and either your Internet password or your
Under the gold “M” on the left, you’ll see “Site Tools”, then “User Guides”. Click on
“User Guides”, and you’ll discover a wealth of How-To information and Hints. You
will also find links to enable you to download the most recent versions of Netscape
and Internet Explorer.
Many EDMS problems can be prevented, if you make sure that your browser is set up
correctly, before logging on to the EDMS.
Off-Campus For security reasons, the EDMS servers are on the University-protected network. If you
