Globe Features
Here are just some of the features of the Globe, can you locate them on your
diagram / model?
1 Roof Thatched roof over galleries.
2 Winch tower Containing machinery for lowering actors onto
the stage.
3 Flag This signalled to people that there was a
performance that day.
4 Gallery Above the stage and a place for musicians,
balcony scenes, etc.
5 Tiring House The actors’ dressing room.
6 Outside walls About 12 metres high.
7 Curtain Separating the stage from the backstage area.
8 Trapdoor Leading down into ‘Hell,’ the space under the
stage.
9 Stage A raised, rectangular stage, sticking out into the
yard. It only had space for 12 actors, at most, to
appear at the time.
10 Yard The open air standing room in front of the stage.
The floor was covered in the hardwearing earth,
ash and hazelnut shells.
11 Oak pillars These were painted to look like marble.
12 Galleries Three storeys of seats, supported by the pillars.

built on marshy grounds.
