The University of Bedfordshire was established in August 2006 by order of the Privy Council, as a result of the
merger between the University of Luton and De Montfort University’s Bedford campus.

However, our history dates back to 1882, when Bedford Training College was founded. Since that time, the
University has established a reputation for delivering excellent teaching, not least in the areas of sport, teacher
training and media.

The University of Bedfordshire is a teaching intensive institution with a broad portfolio of courses, focussing
primarily on vocational areas including education, health, media, sport, computing and business. Our students
are drawn from both home and abroad – with substantial success in recruiting from the EU, China, India,
Pakistan, Nigeria and elsewhere.

We have some 24,000 students, with 46% of students aged over 25 years old, and around 1,200 members of staff
across our two main campuses in Luton and Bedford, the Butterfield Park and Putteridge Bury sites on the
outskirts of Luton, the new Buckinghamshire campus in Aylesbury, and across hospital sites in Bedfordshire and
Buckinghamshire and several partner institutions including local FE colleges and the British School of Osteopathy.

Queen’s Award for Enterprise

The University was presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2011. We won the
accolade for our “outstanding achievement in increasing its overseas income by 154 per cent over three years
and producing an aggregate of £54m over that period". The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are made annually by
HM The Queen and are the most prestigious corporate awards that any UK business can win. The independent
awards are given for five years and show how successful a business is.


Funding for research has doubled following the University’s successful performance in the Government’s
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. Bedfordshire was commended for its ‘world-leading’ research in
several areas including Communications, Cultural and Media Studies, Earth Systems and Environmental Science,
Social Work, Social Policy and Administration, Sport, Tourism and Leisure, and English Language and Literature.
The RAE also rated our research as ‘internationally excellent’ in Computer Science and Informatics, and Business
and Management Studies.

The University is undertaking multi-million pound development with £85m invested in state-of-the-art facilities at
our campuses over the past four years and a further £55m to follow at our Luton campus by 2012, which include
brand-new £40m student halls Fitzroy Court which opened autumn 2011, and a new £15m Postgraduate Centre
still to come.

Luton campus, Park Square

The Luton campus is located in the town centre and is home to Luton’s main teaching buildings. It boasts a brand-
new £34m Campus Centre which opened in autumn 2010, which will act as a base for all student services, made
easily accessible via the new Student Information Desk (SiD). The new Campus Centre houses informal and
formal teaching spaces, as well as exhibition spaces for student work.

The Luton campus also has a coffee shop, restaurant and comfortable staff coffee lounge, and is within easy
walking distance of The Mall Arndale shopping centre and Luton train station.

As part of the multi-million pound redevelopment, the Luton campus has also seen a £1.4m investment in
business facilities including a new Law Moot Court and unique Business Pods, plus labs upgrades including in the
Psychology, and the Biomedical and Forensic Sciences laboratories. A further £12m is being invested in the
Computing and Media departments.

Putteridge Bury campus, Luton

The Putteridge Bury site is located four miles from the main Luton campus on the Bedfordshire-Hertfordshire
border. It is a magnificent neo-Elizabethan country mansion set in 30 acres of landscaped gardens. It is home to
the University of Bedfordshire Business School’s postgraduate courses, the University’s Conference Centre, the
Knowledge Hub and the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School. The University of
Bedfordshire’s own Postgraduate Medical School is also based here.

Luton campus, Butterfield Park

Butterfield Park is an 85-acre business and technology site providing dedicated healthcare teaching and learning
facilities to ensure that students have plenty of opportunities to develop and refine their clinical skills. Future
developments will include simulation laboratories complete with fully functional theatres, ward, and clinic

Bedford campus, Polhill Avenue

This campus has excellent facilities, a friendly atmosphere and a proven track record of exceptional teaching and
graduate employment. The campus is located 20 minutes by foot from the town centre has recently undergone a
£34m redevelopment programme which includes a new Campus Centre housing 280-seat theatre which runs
regular professional seasons, café and social space, two brand-new, fully equipped gymnasiums and state-of-the-
art sport science labs.

Buckinghamshire campus, Aylesbury

The Buckinghamshire campus is located on the ground floor of an executive building and offers state-of-the-art
facilities for healthcare subjects. Oxford House boasts a fully equipped skills lab set up to replicate a working
hospital ward, as well as an IT suite, nine classrooms, social space for self directed learning or group learning
activities, individual learning pods, open areas for small group work and clinical skills facilities.

The Region

Luton and Bedford are situated in the county of Bedfordshire, and are ideally placed between Oxford, Cambridge,
London and Birmingham at the centre of the UK’s transport network.

Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and Luton are set to benefit from inward investment totalling more than £3.2billion
by 2012. Completed developments in and around Luton include a £0.3billion science park at Butterfield and a
£0.2billion investment into widening the M1 motorway.

There are a number of other massive developments currently in progress or in the pipeline. These include
investments into transport infrastructure:

           A further £20million towards Luton Town Centre Transport Scheme
           £85million Luton Dunstable busway
           £16million to update the train stations and London Luton Airport.

There are also massive shopping developments underway or currently in planning process to enhance Luton’s
shopping experience. These include:

           £200million investment in the redevelopment of the Power Court site (opposite the University)
           £400million retail and housing development at the former Vauxhall site in Luton, also known as Napier

The University itself contributes some £300 million to the local economy each year.

The University of Bedfordshire has always maintained a strong record in applicable research and has a national
presence in knowledge transfer. The M1 Knowledge Exchange links the University of Bedfordshire with Cranfield
University in support of business development both locally and regionally. The University currently manages the
Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School – a partnership between the University of
Bedfordshire, the University of Hertfordshire and Cranfield University to provide healthcare courses in the region –
and the Luton and Dunstable Innovation Centre. There is certainly the potential for considerably more growth in
existing markets and in the development of new markets.


Bedford is an idyllic riverside town on a beautiful stretch of the River Great Ouse, only 40 minutes from London by
train. Bedford has excellent transport links to the rest of the UK as it sits between the M1 and A1. Bedford’s
surrounding area has a wealth of parks and open spaces including Bedford Park, near the University campus,
which is ideal for walks, cricket, tennis and basketball. The Box End Park watersports centre offers a variety of
activities including waterski and wakeboarding, while the Priory Marina offers sailing and windsurfing. There is
also an indoor snow slope in the Xscape centre, located in the nearby town of Milton Keynes.

Slightly further afield from Bedford, there are 206 acres of open country for lake and river walks, angling, wildlife
and conservation areas. Also close by is Woburn Abbey and Safari Park, and the famous Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds (RSPB) nature reserve at Sandy.

Bedford has a museum which tells the town’s story from when it was established by the eight century Saxon chief,
Beda, to the modern day. The Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Museum is home to award-winning collections of fine

Bedford grew around a traditional open-air market which still exists today on Wednesdays and Saturdays and is
located in St Paul’s Square, on the banks of the river.

Bedford also hosts many colourful festivals throughout the year including a festival of music, speech and drama, a
music festival, the Bedford Beer Festival and Proms in the Park. In addition, the annual Bedford Regatta and the
biennial River Festival make the most of the town’s riverside location.


Luton is the largest town in Bedfordshire and lies just 50km north of London, so the capital is only a 30-minute
train journey away. Surrounded by the beautiful North Chiltern Hills, it has excellent transport links to the rest of
the UK and Europe. London Luton Airport is just 5km from the Luton campus, Park Square and is currently the
UK’s seventh largest airport.

Luton is not only one of the UK's largest towns, but also one of its most diverse. In all, more than 100 different
nationalities make up this vibrant, multicultural society, and a firm commitment to cultural integration has seen
Luton become something of a model of amicable community relations.

Everyone in Luton benefits from all the facilities you would expect in a town of this size. Local healthcare services
include not only dedicated local GPs and community nurses, but also the large, modern Luton and Dunstable
Hospital, all of which consistently perform well in government league tables.

As for shopping, you are spoilt for choice. Right at the heart of the town, The Mall Arndale shopping centre has

The University is committed to supporting staff training and personal development, with our aim being to provide
excellent training and personal development opportunities to all staff. Our Organisational Development and
Training Unit provide courses, which staff are encouraged to attend.


The University of Bedfordshire offers two pension schemes. For academic staff there is the Teachers Pension
Scheme where the employer’s contribution is 14.1% and the employee’s contribution is 6.4%. New employees
who have been active members in the Universities Superannuation scheme (USS) in the 30 days prior to
commencement at the University of Bedfordshire must continue their membership with the USS. For non-
academic staff there is the Local Government Superannuation Scheme where the employer’s contribution is
averaged at 20.2% and the employee’s contribution is variable depending on your salary.


Annual leave entitlement is generally 25 days for non-academic staff and 35 days for academic staff pro rata per
annum in addition to the 8 statutory bank holidays. In addition, concessionary days may be offered at the
discretion of the University.


During periods of absence owing to sickness, in addition to Statutory Sick Pay, there is normally an entitlement to
sickness payments under the University’s Occupational Sick Pay scheme made according to length of service.
Occupational Sick pay will only be payable in accordance with the University’s Policy on Management of Sickness

Maternity and Paternity Provision

All female/male employees are entitled to maternity/paternity leave. Actual entitlement to maternity leave and pay
is determined by length of service; full details of the schemes are available from the Human Resources


The University’s mentoring scheme is where an established member of staff offers advice, guidance and
encouragement to a new member of staff. This can be accomplished via a variety of methods, but the overriding
intention is that newcomers to the University be introduced to its values, culture and working practices within a
relationship of mutual trust and respect.

Car Parking

The University aims to provide parking for all staff that requires it, but this may not always be possible due to
limited parking spaces available to the University. If no spaces are available staff will be put on a waiting list and
informed by Facilities and Estates when a space becomes available.

Any employee allocated a parking space will be charged a parking fee, which is deducted from your salary on a
monthly basis.

Allocation of a parking space is not guaranteed.

Alexander Sports Centre, Bedford (ASC)
Is a multi-use facility offering an extensive range of sporting opportunities. The sports hall is the size of eight full
size badminton courts and is home to two tennis courts, two indoor football pitches, a full size basketball court,
indoor cricket nets, two full size volleyball courts and a climbing wall. Annual membership from £65 per annum.

The University operates a childcare voucher scheme where the employee will be able to take a portion of their
