Summer Reading Honors English III 2011-2012 The following reading and writing assignments are due the day you return to school. If you have any questions over the summer, you can email me at email@example.com. All assignments must be typed and double-spaced. 1. Read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, and The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. Books are available in the English Office, room 2115. See Ms. Mangels to sign out a book before finals begin. As you read, keep a list of parallels between the two works. Use post-it notes to mark passages, jot down ideas, and record background knowledge you bring to the novels. I will check your books for post-it notes and I will collect your list of parallels on the first day of school. The first unit of the 1st quarter will be based on a comparison of these two books, so read with a purpose. 2. Read one of the books from the list of current titles below and complete the following two assignments: a. All of the books below deal with a person's journey towards self-discovery. Write an essay in which you explore a character's journey by examining, analyzing, and explaining key elements such as obstacles and epiphanies, and then make a connection to some aspect of your life and your journey towards self-discovery. (3 pages max) b. Be creative! Rewrite the ending, outline a new scene, or create a brief dialogue which could be inserted somewhere in your book. Provide rationale for your work. (2 pages) ◦ The Namesake, Jhumpa Lahiri ◦ The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls ◦ She’s Come Undone, Wally Lamb ◦ The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you. Enjoy your summer!
