Post Title Head of Faculty
Core Purpose The Head of Faculty will exercise a teacher’s professional skills and
judgement as follows:
To raise standards and be accountable for student attainment,
progress and development within the English Faculty and to
monitor and support student progress.
To be accountable for leading, managing and developing the
English curriculum area ensuring the provision of an
appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated
curriculum for students studying in the Faculty, in accordance
with the aims of the school and the Curricular Policies determined
by the Governing Body and Headteacher of the school.
To manage and deploy effectively teaching, support staff,
financial and physical resources within the Faculty to support the
designated curriculum area.
To undertake the professional duties and responsibilities of a
teacher holding a Teaching and Learning responsibility, as set out
in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document.
To undertake the professional duties outlined above by having
regard to National Standards published from time to time by
subject and other national bodies.

Core 1. Lead, manage and develop the English Faculty by:
Responsibilities Identifying areas for improvement and contributing to school self-
evaluation and improvement planning with particular regard to
the English curriculum areas.
Using data and other information to inform strategic planning and
identify improvement targets for the English curriculum areas.
Implementing school procedures and monitoring standards within
the English curriculum areas.
Developing programmes which offer challenges and opportunities
for all students to succeed within the English curriculum areas.
Providing the school’s leadership team with performance
information and data from the English curriculum areas and
managing the Faculty’s collection of data, meeting school
requirements.
Evaluating the impact of all improvement activities on the quality
of Teaching and Learning activities in the English curriculum
areas
Developing the role of support staff in delivering the English
curriculum across the school.
Managing resources efficiently within the English curriculum
area so that Teaching and Learning is effectively supported.
Ensuring that Schemes of Work in the English curriculum achieve
curriculum entitlement and coverage.
Ensure that key skills (Literacy, Numeracy, ICT) are developed
across the English curriculum areas.
Ensuring that cross-curricular links and opportunities support
pupil development.
Ensuring that all students have equal access to the curriculum.
Establishing and maintaining links with other agencies in order to
develop the English curriculum area.
To make appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are
absent.
To establish common standards of practice within the Faculty.
2. Impact on the progress of pupils within the English Faculty by:
Identifying appropriate attainment and/or achievement targets for
students studying English.
Monitoring student standards and achievement against annual
targets and tracking progress.
Monitoring planning, curriculum coverage and learning
outcomes.
Monitoring standards of student behaviour and application.
Leading evaluation strategies where improvements are identified.
Ensuring that all students achieve to the best of their ability.
Ensuring that relevant attainment/achievement targets are met.
Planning and implementing strategies where improvement needs
are identified.
Establishing and monitoring systems to assess and record student
progress and achievement within agreed policies.
Ensuring that the work of support staff promotes educational
progress for all students.
Facilitating the development of independent study skills and
Personalized Learning.
Ensuring that Schemes of Work have regard to continuity and
progression for students.
Ensuring that students’ development of key skills supports overall
progress.
Supporting and developing transition arrangements in order to
ensure continuity for students.
Ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to achieve and
make progress.
Establishing and maintaining links with other agencies in order to
support the educational progress of students.
Ensuring that the Behaviour Management System is implemented
in the Faculty so that effective learning can take place.
3. To Lead, Develop and Enhance the teaching practice of others by:
Developing and maintaining personal expertise and leadership
and sharing this with other Faculty staff.
Modelling model Exemplary Classroom Practice
Monitoring standards of teaching and providing feedback to
teachers.
Monitoring standards of performance of teaching assistants and
providing feedback.
Evaluating standards of teaching and identifying areas for
improvement.
Planning and implementing strategies to improve teaching where
needs are identified.
Inducting teaching and support staff and monitoring new staff
Supporting and monitoring staff needing extra support.
acting as a Performance Management team leader for identified
staff.
Supporting the identification and achievement of performance
objectives which will enhance the teaching practice of staff .
Taking a lead in developing the work of support staff.
Identifying and meeting the CPD needs of staff.
Leading in the development of effective Teaching and Learning
styles.
Ensuring that teachers and other staff are supporting the
development of key skills.
Developing programmes to enable teachers and other staff to
disseminate Good Practice and improve performance.
Ensuring that staff are treated fairly and equitably and that there is
no unfair or illegal discrimination.
Establishing and maintaining links with other agencies in order to
develop and enhance the work of staff.
To participate in the school’s ITT programme as appropriate.
4. Line Management Responsibilities
Ensuring that Performance Management arrangements are
effectively discharged by other team leaders in the English
Faculty.
Taking responsibility for the Performance Management of the
teaching and non-teaching staff in English Faculty.
Monitoring the effectiveness and impact of Performance
Management and or CPD arrangements within the English
Faculty.
Being responsible for the line management of the staff in the
English Faculty.
Planning the deployment of staff expertise to achieve school
improvement objectives.
Taking initial responsibility for the pastoral care and welfare of
the staff in the English Faculty.
Deploying and managing staff to ensure Teaching and Learning
opportunities are maximised.
Ensuring the Health and Safety Policies and Practices, including
Risk Assessment throughout the Faculty are in-line with national
requirements and are updated where necessary.
Managing the available resources of space, staff, money and
equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures
laid down; and keeping appropriate records.
5. General
To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in
accordance with the duties of a standard scale teacher.
To undertake the duties of a Form Tutor when required to do so in
accordance with the role description.
