Grade 8 Social Studies Performance Assessment Task Eulogy of an Explorer In your Renaissance country, a great tragedy has occurred. One of your national heroes, a famous and tremendous explorer has died. Thanks to your knowledge of the Renaissance world, trade, and your way with words, the king (or queen if you are English), has requested that you present the eulogy at the funeral of this national treasure. You decide that the best way to honour your chosen explorer is to do ALL of the following: 1. Provide the basics of their life 2. Describe their discoveries and worldwide explorations 3. Explain how their discoveries and exploration changed the Renaissance world 4. Identify their motivations for exploring the world (did they believe in increased trade, expansionism, slavery, etc.?) 5. Identify and describe how their intercultural experiences changed the way Europeans viewed the world The king expects that your eulogy will cover the importance of the explorer’s life and will adequately honour their impact on the European world so you need to ensure that your speech is well-written with correct spelling, grammar and sentence structure. You may choose from the following list of Renaissance explorers to write a eulogy for. Ferdinand Magellan Christopher Columbus John Cabot Jacques Cartier Henry the Navigator Vasco de Gama Hernando de Soto Henry Hudson Samuel de Champlain Sir Walter Raleigh Sir Francis Drake Francisco Pizarro Grade 8 Social Studies Performance Assessment: Rubric Eulogy of an Explorer Student Criteria\Level 4 3 2 1 Insufficient/Blank Excellent Proficient Adequate Limited Describes the Provides a Provides a Provides a Provides an No score is awarded factors that comprehensive substantial rudimentary undeveloped because there is insufficient evidence affect description of description of description of description of of student worldview the explorer’s the explorer’s the explorer’s the explorer’s performance based (18.104.22.168, affect on affect on affect on affect on on the requirements 22.214.171.124) worldview. worldview. worldview. worldview. of the assessment task.
