                              for 2011-2012 Juniors

Parents and Students:

Because many Florida high school graduates are not meeting college readiness standards on
college entrance exams, students enter college needing to take remedial courses. This costs
students time and money.

To address this problem, the Florida Legislature recently passed HB 1255 which requires
districts to assess the level of college readiness of students prior to 12th grade. Any 11th grade
student who has not previously met the required postsecondary readiness competencies on a
college entrance exam and who has scored at a level 2 or 3 on FCAT Reading or level 2, 3, or 4
on FCAT Math will be required to take the Post-Secondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) in
February, 2012.

This legislation requires any student who does not meet the college readiness benchmarks as
prescribed below to complete a college preparatory English and /or math course during their
senior year of high school. Completion of the course(s) is a graduation requirement for students
whose PERT scores indicate a need for additional preparation before being ready for college-
level work. Students are encouraged to take the SAT and/or ACT as an alternative means of
demonstrating college readiness.
