					              ENGLISH and DRAMA DEPARTMENT
Teaching staff within the department
The department consists of five full time and one part time teachers of
English. In addition, we also have a full time Drama specialist and a
dedicated ATA attached to the English department, as part of the Renewing
Intervention Strategy.

Accommodation and Facilities within the Department
The English and Drama Department is housed on one side of the split site.
Each member of staff has his or her own well-equipped room. Two of these
rooms have interactive whiteboards, while the others have data projection

All English rooms are situated on the first floor, near to the Learning Support
department (W21) and the Renewing Intervention room. The computer suite
is close by and all teaching rooms are supported by stand alone computers
which are linked directly to the internet and school intranet. DVD, video and
audio equipment is available for use in all rooms.             Our classrooms
accommodate up to 34 students and are light and bright. In addition, we have
two resource areas in which key materials are stored.

The Drama Studio is also situated on the first floor and is well-equipped with
light and sound systems for lessons and use in our school productions.

Learning Resource Centre
The Learning Resource Centre (LRC), which is situated on the opposite side
of the road, plays a central role in the English curriculum. All Year 7 pupils
are taken through a library introduction programme during the autumn term.
This is followed up by individual teachers within their schemes of work.
Reading is regarded as a central part of our curriculum and we actively
encourage wider reading. The LRC boasts a wide range of fiction and non-
fiction books, computer suite and ‘Success maker’ suite. ‘Success maker’ is
accessed by students at the Allertonshire and by our local feeder primary
schools. The LRC hosts a Carnegie shadowing group, lunch-time clubs and
after school homework sessions.

Renewing Intervention / Learning Support
Our Renewing Intervention assistant provides intervention for targeted
students across the ability range. She liaises closely with the Learning
Support team to ensure that the needs of every student are catered for.

The Learning Support department is highly successful in providing
personalised programmes for those students with Special Educational Needs.
The specialist team of ATA and HTLAs use reading and spelling age data,
produced by the English department, as one of their many identification
procedures. This is then used to target students who need additional spelling
and reading intervention. Programmes such as ‘Toe by Toe’ and the Reader
Leader scheme, assisted by the use of our Year 9 students, are used.

The English Curriculum
Our schemes of work are jointly planned. We have literacy strategy compliant
units of work in Year 7 and 8. Our priorities are to review schemes of work to
ensure they support the assessment for learning initiative, the new KS3
curriculum and SEAL.

At the end of Year 9, students transfer to Northallerton College, our partner
school. In order to ease this transition, we have a unit of work which is started
at the Allertonshire and completed at Northallerton College. Last year, the unit
provided the students with the opportunity to complete the first unit of the AQA

Individual teachers’ own ideas are welcomed as we work together, continually
reviewing and developing the units of work. Staff are encouraged to take
responsibility for the re-writing of schemes of work, individually or
collaboratively. The department works well as a team and all views and
opinions are valued at our department meetings.

We have a number of regular extra-curricular activities, which we are always
seeking to expand. We run a popular creativity weekend in Swaledale each
year. We also host World Book Day events, theatre company visits and an
annual school production.

Student Grouping
Students are taught in mixed ability groups of up to 32 students. Where
possible, a much smaller learning support group is formed to cater for the
needs of identified students.

Learning for Life
In Year 7, the students follow the Learning for Life course (L4L) for four
lessons a week. This is an integrated, skill based curriculum which focuses
on learning to learn. Teachers in the English department form part of the L4L

The department is forward looking, energetic and adaptable. We hold many
traditional values and we also wish to empower students. We are working
towards an enquiry based curriculum and we are currently trialling the use of
P4C (Philosophy for Children) within the department. We strive to ensure the
curriculum works for our students; they deserve the best we can provide.

   Successful experience of teaching in this subject at secondary level
     (successful completion of teaching practice would fulfil this

   An understanding of current developments in learning and teaching

   Evidence of curriculum development
   Experience / understanding of teaching an integrated curriculum or

   Experience / interest in extra curricular activities
