The Grammar of Academic English
Elizabeth O’Dowd, Beth Peterson-- Saint Michael’s College; Nancy Nadel—Hunt Middle School
Academic English requires progressive linguistic complexity through the grade levels – not only in
vocabulary, but also in the grammatical strategies that express abstract meaning relationships. For
English learners especially, this grammar needs to be taught explicitly, systematically, and proactively.
However, neither the WIDA standards nor the Grade Expectations offer much direction for such
instruction. This project attempts to map out a developmental continuum of linguistic complexity for
English learners in middle school.
