Employers tap into Smelter skills base

Rio Tinto Alcan’s Lynemouth Smelter has attracted a range of employers to a
special Careers Fair it is hosting to offer opportunities for staff seeking new jobs
following the announcement of the closure of the site.

The fair will provide staff with the chance to talk directly to local, national and
international employers, recruiters and a range of support and training providers.

Organisations expected to attend on 3 April include Nissan UK Ltd, Huntsman,
Novelis, American Air Filters, Northumberland College, Northumberland County
Council, AMEC, Jobcentre Plus, Tharsus, Next Step, G4S, SMD and Banks

Caroline Kennedy, Rio Tinto Alcan’s UK human resources director at Lynemouth
Smelter, said: “Our employees are highly skilled with valuable experience and a
lot to offer local employers.

“The response we have had from businesses across the UK and beyond has
been very encouraging.

“The organisations attending will, I’m sure, be rewarded by meeting our
motivated and well-trained staff who have excellent transferable skills.

“Potential employers can utilise wide-ranging skills available in Operations,
Leadership, Administration, Engineering, Finance and many other disciplines
associated with operating a large manufacturing site.

“Our workforce can hold their heads high and compete with the best when it
comes to securing new employment.”

Businesses who would like to attend the Careers Fair are urged to register their
interest. Employers can telephone 01670 393447 or email for further information.
