									            TENNESSEE RECYCLING COALITION CONFERENCE
                         TECHNICAL TOUR

The Commons, Vanderbilt University’s living and learning campus for
first-year students, consists of 10 residential houses and The Commons
Center, a community dining and meeting facility. Completed in the fall of
2008, the Commons is home to approximately 1,600 freshmen, who live in a
cohesive community that offers instructional learning in the residential
houses, senior faculty living on site in a community of scholars, and
numerous social and community service activities for students outside
the classroom.

A total of 7 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Certified buildings, 4 Gold and 3 Silver, are located at The Commons
campus, representing one of the largest collections of LEED Certified
buildings in the southeastern United States. The U.S. Green Building
Council’s LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted
benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-
performance green buildings. Organizations must apply for the
certification, which is recognized as proof that a building is
environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and
work.

The Commons Center tour will showcase some of the many conscious
decisions regarding the systems and material choices made during the
design stage of these facilities to assure high quality indoor air and
to promote an environment of good health and comfort such as:
- Access to natural lighting and day lighting in occupied spaces
- Aluminum, plastic, paper and cardboard recycling
- Low volatile organic carbon (VOC) materials, including carpets,
paints, sealants, wall coverings and adhesives
- Recycled-content materials, such as carpets, terrazzo flooring and
drywall
- Locally selected brick materials, reducing the need for cross-country
transport
- Water conserving plumbing fixtures
- Energy Star compliant electronics
- Locally-sourced, organic and vegetarian dining choices
