Mission of the Smart Energy Solutions Committee
Georgia Chapter Sierra Club
The Georgia Chapter Sierra Club Smart Energy Solutions Committee promotes a healthy
environment in Georgia by supporting clean energy production and efficient consumption and
opposing polluting energy generation and wasteful usage. Working with Sierra Club members
and other concerned environmental organizations we support legislation that advances our goals;
we process litigation on issues that cannot be equitably resolved; we raise community awareness
on energy issues by education, demonstration and news releases; and we practice responsible
energy conservation and efficiencies in our own lives.
The Georgia Chapter Sierra Club Smart Energy Solutions Committee wants Georgia to help
avoid dangerous global warming by reducing greenhouse emissions. We advocate shifting from
reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear energy to a safe, sustainable energy future built on efficiency,
renewable fuels, and innovative technologies. We oppose new dirty coal-fired power plants and
expensive nuclear power plants with long term and short term environmental costs.
Therefore, we support diverse clean energy production and efficient consumption of energy by
conservation and innovative technology. These are among the energy solutions we support:
Clean renewable and sustainable energy production
Renewable Portfolio Standards requiring power companies to generate a
percentage of their power from renewable resources.
Clean distributive energy resources over polluting centralized power production.
Wind energy power generation along the coast and other viable locations.
Biomass and waste cellulosic fuel production that are environmentally sound.
Low-impact hydroelectric production that have little ecological detriment.
Solar electric power generating technologies.
Solar heating and cooling.
Landfill gas energy generation.
Waste material natural gas energy generation.
Research and development of future sustainable energy technologies.
Energy conservation and efficiency
Reduce, reuse, recycle and reclaim.
Use of energy saving lighting and appliances.
Use of fuel efficient vehicles and smart driving choices.
Reduced water consumption and lower water heating.
Use mass transit systems where practicable.
Thermostat control settings that save energy.
Energy reducing strategies such as insulation and using smart technologies.
