A Review for How to Fool Fritz -2 (H2FF2) Malola Prasath
‘Albert H. Alberts’ has presented this interesting volume of,” HOW TO FOOL FRITZ-II
(H2FF2, in short) exploring the latest sensation in chess – “MAMS”. The book explores
highly risky opening ideas fueled from bizarre human intuitive moves, resulting in long
lasting initiative very early in opening phase of the game. The author has presented more
than 100 interesting scenarios of introducing such risky journeys, further leading towards
uncompromising game (Often Astonishing). For serious contenders of the game, this is
an eclectic collection of opening ideas – stereotyped under MAMS (not just synthesized
Gambling with Fritz Engine!), to introduce a genuine method to use the chess engines for
‘NextGEN’ preparation regime. So hold on to your book carefully! Engage it for couple
of months! It is a gateway for the improving your MAN-MACHINE intelligence!

It was first Garry Kasparov influenced by Botwinnik’s tutelage to have incorporated
machine analysis to serious chess preparation. Kasparov’s team soon had brought wealth
of knowledge in openings from machine assisted preparation. What Kasparov had
brought in as innovation to the opening preparation can be called as ‘first generation of
MAMS’, envisioned by Botwinnik. Computers soon mushroomed its way to become a
common place in today’s serious chess preparation scenario. Right now chess is so
impulsive and Machine Assisted Man chess (Advanced chess) is becoming more intense
with a premise that Human Intuition and Computer calculation form a better striking
force than the individuals – that’s from a gaming front. Now with Microsoft’s dream of
putting a computer in each home is fairly turning realistic even in developing countries,
like India. With a powerful laptop being able to run top performing chess engines- Man
Machine environment is no longer special case to be confined to any particular settings.

It is very naturally that there is a new wave “Introduction of ‘MAN-Assisted MACHINE
CHESS’,(MAMS –German influence) as a mode of chess (not exactly Advanced Chess)
to be re-introduced to Humans – Surprisingly, It is a definite promise to fight with human
ways! This book or sequel can also be considered an important baseline of method in
chess that keeps re-inventing itself in chess – “Sacrificial Style to seize the Initiative of
Strong attack manning the risks better”! Dr. AA (for convenience) has kept human
striking ability as central for H2FF2 sequel. And when it comes to striking in combat –
these are two best examples I could relate to in relation to the notion of Man’s and
Machine’s Ability.

First example is in chess, I could relate to an article– where an interesting idea that
Gelfand came about in 2007, in Ruylopez with striking d5! (A move, which was possible
in the standard Ruylopez Opening that was never played by anyone over the last 100
years of chess base collection!!! – I am unable to trace the original article! But this is not
the only human surprise of the century in chess! Dr. AA have at least presented 100 other
case) Machine’s have predictably failed to identify the innovation DNA- Not to blame
them, Men too don’t know their innovation gene – whether they exist! – However,
novelties in first 6 moves are cracked by machines! H2FF2 quite seem to fool even that!
Thus, Man’s Striking ability has been greater than machines. Let’s expect MAMS as
Man-assisted is expected to be more colorful than “machine assisted” – Traditional
Blunder check/ Novelty check by spanning through the mighty evaluation table”.

Second example is from my subject expertise – Robotics! Further, to add to the perils of
machine’s striking ability – I could recollect a speech during our 2006 Graduate
A Review for How to Fool Fritz -2 (H2FF2) Malola Prasath
orientation program at Robotics Institute by a Carnegie Mellon professor – “In Japan, an
exciting experiment was carried out to best test the combating capability of an fully
automated intelligent Warship – here was the robot with the most sophisticated control
algorithm, fired maiden test missile on to itself, completely destroying the warship. We
were soon welcomed into the world of Robotics and walking into the 50th Year of School
of Computer Science, at the Carnegie Mellon University! Into a significant Milestone!!

This book is certainly aimed at a Grandmaster level and it is definitely there without turn
down any of less privileged chess enthusiasts! So get your book! Get ready for a roller-
coaster ride in Chess! If you don’t yet get anything of it, go through this favorite example
of mine from the book, it will give you the key insights of where MAMS is heading us
towards. This position arises from French Tarrasch heavily manipulated in MAMS. (1.e4
e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nf3 c5 4. Nbd2 a6 5. c4!?(M) cd4 6. ed5 ed5 7. Bd3 cd4 8. Nc4 b5? Leads
to the principal diagram) (Note: (M) denotes MAN instructed move)

My first couple of days was spent in understanding the
b5! (I had indeed spent more than 100 hours in studying
the intriguing beauty of this position.) Rather than ‘b5?’
and resorting to text moves. What could provoke black
to open up and create weak diagonals, pot holes and
further yield to predictable development (Cover the
space with hyper-Modern piece activity) – “Bishop to
b7, Nd7, Be7-Nf6 then 0-0. (May be trade off the dark
colored bishop with Bb4+) – Black is not better but Ok!
I agree that I am optimistic with b5? And more over, I
was not in mode of Chess itself in the first place, with
my preliminary analysis.) Secondly, I was looking into probe into risky environment
with Nce5 f6 – Ng6!? Opening up the territories and I was distracted in this way – I
should say. Further there is always a strong treat from Black Qe7 to chase the king out of
castling or trade the queens. I would have definitely hated to play this position in Bug-
house – In Chess this is all interesting! Looking into the book move! It’s all intriguing!!

9. Ncd2 (M) turned down all my whims and fancy about black’s position, allowing Qe7
was trivial –Too predictable - A bell now Rings! From Steinitz’s perspective – “One who
has the initiative must attack! Or he will lose the initiative” 9. Ncd2 was much looking
like lost initiative – despite sea of weakness present in black’s camp!

                               < Root A> <Root B>
A Review for How to Fool Fritz -2 (H2FF2) Malola Prasath
But on turning to H2FF2 text moves, I was completely startled – The book probes into a
completely new dimension idea Ne4 or Be4 (Refer to diagrams above)– sacrificing one
of the two well developed piece to allow castle, to create more freedom. (My Instinct - Is
it a Muzio Idea aligned at the center of the board and attack calibrated towards e-file:
May be, but not exactly.) Steinitz’s must be super happy on seeing this initiative drive!

I don’t want to expose the in-depth analysis – to retain readers’ rights to enjoy their
moments) however, I do wish to present an end position Root B: (Page 149 from Chapter
4: French) with these dabbling ideas to kindle the power users of this book.

An interim position in the complete analysis – Threat of invasion (1... Rd7 2.Ra6 Rd5 3.
Bb6 +-), black’s king side completely paralyzed or Bishop turned as a backward pawn!)

                                                              .

Thus, if b5 was dubious, so is the f5 plan (preserving the b5 instincts) to engulf the decoy
at e4. However it is all irrational decisions that we fancy, when a decoy appears right in
front of our eyes – May be Dr. Dan Ariely (Author of Predictably Irrational) will be very
happy to quote these examples in his chess classes – MAMS getting more human as it
seems, but computers too are fooled predictably – H2FF2 is working to Perfection! (But
to me the notion of original b5 is still intriguing – ‘I still keep wondering why b5?’

Enough of Exposing Exclusive Content! Further, let’s turn towards Author’s romantic
style of Writing that’s worth mentioning. From a book perspective, the style kindles the
reader to be excited, each time refreshing from possible fatigue of tedious synthesis
(Remember! AA has already fooled the chess boards!). Every time, we want to get back
and have a look, there is a Stem Diagram to relate to. Examples are carefully chosen –
they avoid ponderous options, and remain always crisp. This is very much inclusive for
Braille chess world. I would seriously recommend an audio version of the work. Further,”
end positions” are available to visualize the beauty of the finish. This is yet another
inclusive stuff from Author – “I hope it is well received from the readers’ point of view.
The peppy style of writing is balancing much of the adrenaline rush we encounter from
appreciating risk levels. Further the presentation of the computer evaluation is a great
decoy – “A great stigma to believe the author” – Further moving us away from computers
to cross-verify the evaluation (Carbon footprints reduced considerably)– “Least I got
frustrated calibrating this evaluation against 10 different engines playing with various
strengths – but I made no point with it”.
A Review for How to Fool Fritz -2 (H2FF2) Malola Prasath
Over the years Dr. AA has appreciated the Machine’s Melancholy’ equally to the MAN’s
feeling towards it- ‘Master’s Myths must not fail- It triumphs in this Sequel of H2FF2’.
Interestingly, the Dr. AA has sought to Steinitz’s character to react to Man Assisted
Moves – Thus creating a perfect Food chain! Nothing seems rather suspicious. It is also
apparent from Fritz evaluation that computers too seem to naturally think and act in
Stenitz’s ways– “The best refutation to gambit is by accept it”. Further, Tarrash added an
element of risk “The acceptance of Gambit is principally (! –Nimzowitch’s Exploration)
Erroneous, as it results in dangerous situations”. The book has been pivoted on these old
rival principles. For Example, Look carefully into the case of “Spassky’s Brilliancy”
against Bronstein being refuted by computer analysis. Also in treatment of Sicilian
Poison Pawn variation, find how MAMS best translates Steinitz’s (MAN’s) vision in the
traditionally forbidden opening theory”. It is all interestingly explained in the book.

These days, whether it is old mummified King’s gambit or a mythical line in Sicilian
Dragon, we still do pursue it with a modest preparation, as a secret weapon in the rapids
to induce a “psychological surprise elements”!)– “A strong disruptive Human Factor”.
However such motive is making the opponent fight in his unknown territory and provoke
him to make mistakes or take risks which he would not have made in the familiar
grounds. H2FF2 has surpassed all these fooling techniques! Gone way forward and
toward systematic ways introducing ‘strong, intuitive moves’ to self initiate Risk’ –
That’s the Brilliant Idea! Each example of the book illustrates this Vision!

Further, Dr.AA, brings sensation in readers in producing lucrative strategy from extreme
tactics that looks very compelling from Man’s perspective despite machines (-FRITZ
more collectively) unbelievably quoting high Risks– It all looks like “Gambling in the
time trouble” Yet placing the perfect Moves. To add it to all perils, ‘Man assisted
Moves’ look apparently unacceptable even to top performing machines. I am not quite
sure, whether existing engines can be recalibrated to accommodate MAMS perturbation
in computer Evaluation– Dr. AA is confident that computer tolerate one human moves
but not with too many as the case presented in this book. I see yet another IBM vs.
Kasparov cold war. May be we can turn to neutral person, (One interesting person to ask
about this would be Dr. Peter Jansen (Language Technologies Institute, CMU), who
secured his PhD from Carnegie Mellon studying the effect of Human Like Moves in
Computer play! May be this is all opposite sense).

Enough of opening theory and Stuff! Is MAMS practical? Dr. AA has real tournament
evidence to say - that it is possible and indeed a mode of play in 2750+ (Elite-GM coup!)
It is indeed interesting that Dr. AA shows more games in MAMS flavor from regular
championships than show instincts from “Purely Advanced chess tournaments” or
“computer Events”– Everyone will be able to recall Kramnik’s stunning positional
sacrifices of in his game against Morozevich Mexico,2008.

Well! If you ask me what is the inspiration for Dr. AA behind this book – “May be Dr.
AA has chased Queens all over the chess board, inspired from techniques from
computational geometry algorithms or have stolen instincts from Anderson to Zukertort
over the ABC’s of opening atrocities (Wait! But none of them is purely MAMS).
A Review for How to Fool Fritz -2 (H2FF2) Malola Prasath
No doubt MAMS is an intriguing concept, it takes even consummate skills to appreciate
the content of this book – Definitely this book is for a GMs to refine their naïve ways of
computer assisted mastery. More to appreciate is the effort to deliver all these in a well
articulated book catered to a more universal group - whose chess will be easily influenced
by machine preparation to varying degree. However, H2FF2 is still a stigma for “ideal
lanes”, (in which we must engage the mighty minds) but certainly the book lacks a
serious content on the method of managing MAMS as a holistic process. Dr. AA has
certainly hid lot of his Nimzowitsch’s instincts in theorizing MAMS. This induces a gap
between the ‘Ideal world of MAMS’ and ‘Real world of MAMS’ – (Well, That’s not the
very intent of book) However we seriously wish for such a book to bridge this gap!

Another dimension: When I agreed to take up the review, only one thing was in my
mind – the title! “How to Fool Fritz -2(H2FF2, convenience sake)” - First six days, I was
very excited to see, my debate with professional chess players in my country (immaterial)
coming into lime-light, especially over lost chess careers, simply due to cheating using
blue-tooth devices networked with FRITZ. “I was always joking that we professionals
aped the computers and they aped the devices, it is still ‘Advanced Chess in Preparation’
verses ‘Advanced Chess in Execution’ –Also this has also proved that you people are
poor executors at board” – undoubtedly a cynical view.

However, as a trainer I was just trying to motivate “Chessbase intensive folks”, to
alleviate them from social impact of losing in their own confident ways! “Hook or Crook
by COMPUTER ASSISTED”. From the elite players within India, I could find a wide
claim that they could never beat an Elo.3000 RYBKA machine and succumb to their own
mental pressures by accumulating mental fatigue. Secondly, my belief of computer
centric methods was just another sound method in chess, but lacked some force as “other
methods” to kindle imagination. Just 6 days later, I had burst into happiness to have
identified some one in “Other world”, not only advocating my prophesies but in addition
had envisioned it even more, sown many seeds at the right depth (over +/- 2 Risky level),
cultivated the MAMS in various “Open Mine fields”, carefully nurtured it and finally
treated it well into a strong opening repertoire for true masters to acknowledge, accept
and be motivated by it. “Now we can revive those apparently “lost careers”, to play in
the next dimension of their chess”. This book can be taken to more practical training/
rehabilitation centers than to just confining it as an eclectic collection book.

Now to some negatives: It is just every authors dream to produce a book without
technical misprints. ‘Machine Assisted Man Reading and Man Assisted Machine
Screening’ have both predictably failed in publisher’s history! This book is no exception–
Indeed it is painful, but that pain is ephemeral and would disappear over the impact that
this book will create in the ignited chess minds. (My assistance in catching some of the
bugs is available as an attachment! –there aren’t lots, few irritating stereotypes). Second
area, was a pain in assuming that moves within brackets are still MAMS mode, small
explanation on the notations used in this book could have further facilitated the lazy
bones (MAMS is already a cold touch, we were very reactive). I could not be convinced
on some of Man assisted “?” – Least in the case of an example highlighted above. An
explanation on intention of use of Mistakes/ Good moves can be redefined for the
purpose of the book, as interestingly with MAMS like content ‘RISK is not uncommon’.
A Review for How to Fool Fritz -2 (H2FF2) Malola Prasath
In summary, the book is both entertaining and enlightening. It is indeed interesting to
note that method in chess is ever expanding. The book not only quotes the success of
MAMS in bringing the ‘New Morphian Era’, it has identified symptoms of methods
culminating from our rich instincts (whether risk instincts or not) to dominate the future
of chess. Further, proves that new problems exist to solve at chess– MAMS will make
an addition to the literature on chess theories, identify some open problems.

Definitely on exploring these ideas, I am convinced that we will soon be compelled to
reach towards our 1000 ways of stealing a point from FRITZ. I am happy that this book
really has hit at the very bottom of the deck (where computers are used to enrich the
perspective of opening ideas). We would all be deeply interested to know the
testimonials from Grandmasters influenced by this book.

Certainly there is more to dig in with MAMS tools and unearth rich treasures in Chess –
“H2FF2 is more like ‘End of the Beginning of MAMS’ – Lets wait for more surprises.

The close out remarks is interest and intriguing (Though significantly evidenced – Still
we need to evolve a bit to appreciate this conclusion)

   – “Draw All Games with Black Playing Symmetric Countermoves (Abandon
       Sicily Too)”
   – In the event the machine chooses an asymmetric – Human Instructed First
       Countermove: WIN
   – If not: Man against Machine is a DRAW until Eternity”
   – Now ready for MAMS to take on Fischer’s chess!

Finally Candid feedback: If you ask me –Was it worth for you investing the time for this
book? I have lived for more than 6 desperate months with it. This book has impacted
much of my belief system on “Computer-Human associated features space in chess” -
Now can simply be remembered it as “MAMS”. There is also a key realization through
this book – “After all computers have really not curbed our imagination or instincts,
they have just created another blue ocean for us to explore”

With H2FF2– It’s definitely MAMS ways!

I wish the readers a very good luck!
