Travelling abroad during your stay in the UK

Before you travel abroad, it is useful to find out:

 About the immigration controls you will face on both your outward and return journeys
 Whether you need a visa to enter the country of your destination and any other
countries you are passing through on your journey
 About the visa requirements and the application procedure relevant to each country
       you wish to visit

Details about who needs a visa and visa application procedures are usually available on a
country’s UK Embassy / High Commission website, the address for which can be found at
www.embassyworld.com.

The Schengen Visa Scheme

This scheme enables you to visit the following 25 countries in the European Economic Area
using only one visa.

      Austria Belgium Czech Republic Denmark
      Estonia Finland France Germany
      Greece Hungary Iceland Italy
       Latvia Lithuania Luxembourg Malta
  The Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal
     Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden
    Switzerland
To apply for a Schengen Visa:

 You should apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the most time
          during your trip.
 If you are planning to spend equal amounts of time in more than one country, you
should apply to the embassy of the country that you will visit first.

The visa requirements for each embassy are slightly different; some will allow you to submit
your application by post while most will require you to attend an appointment. It is important
that you plan in advance as there may be delays in getting an appointment at busy times.
You will also need to allow plenty of time to prepare your application documents. For most
Schengen visa applications, you will need the following documents:

 A completed application form (usually can be downloaded from the appropriate
          embassy website)
 Visa fee (60 Euros payable in local currency – around £50-55)
    Recent passport size photograph(s)
 Original passport or official travel document + UK ID card for Foreign Nationals (if you
          have one)
 Evidence of your student status within the UK
 Evidence of sufficient funds to complete your trip
 Evidence of accommodation and / or your reason for the visit
    Medical insurance

You can find further information about how to apply and also download an application form

Leaving and Re-entering the UK

Before you leave the UK, you should check the expiry date of both your passport and your UK
visa. If your permission to stay in the UK is due to expire before you plan to return, you
should take advice from the International Student Support Service before you leave. You
should also take advice if your permission to stay in the UK is for a period of less than six
months. You should carry the following documents with you in your hand luggage:

    Passport or travel document
 Biometric identity card if you have a UK ID card instead of a visa stamp in your
       passport
 Your police registration certificate (if applicable)
 An up-to-date letter from your school administrative office confirming you are enrolled
       on a full time course
 Evidence that you have enough money to support yourself and any dependants (such
as your bank statements for the last three months, or a letter from your sponsor
confirming that they are continuing to sponsor you).
