Project Workers (Overnight) (Ref: OPW)
£10 p/h (inc. 10.77% holiday pay); 1-3 shifts per week.
Fixed Term Contract: Late October 2012 to End of March 2013

WLCHC is an independent charity recruiting a team of Overnight Project Workers for
London’s largest winter night shelter project, which will run from 5th November 2011 until
25th March 2012. We believe in providing a high quality and compassionate service to our
homeless guests many of whom have a range of support needs, such as alcohol dependency
and mental health issues.

Our shelters run from a different church venue, every night of the week on the boroughs of
Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Wandsworth and Richmond. It is a waking
shift that lasts from 10pm until 7.15am. Working as part of a three-person team, you will be
responsible for ensuring the security and safety of all guests in the shelter through the
night, and that all project activities meet health and safety requirements. You must remain
awake and alert throughout the night and respond appropriately to any situations or
emergencies that may occur. The shelters house 35 people each night – though more may
be accommodated if the weather is exceptionally cold. You will be expected to take part in
regular checks throughout the night. The three duty Project Workers are also responsible
for preparing and serving breakfast to our guests and ensuring that everyone leaves each
venue by 7am.

Evening shifts (from 6.30pm -10.00pm), supporting the Project Managers and evening
volunteer teams will also be available, at the same hourly rate, to members of the overnight
team; but overnight work is the main part of the job.

You will receive supervision and the opportunity to attend training sessions.

We are looking for confident and empathetic people to join our overnight team. Come and
be part of something special and help us to relieve poverty amongst street homeless people
of West London.

WLCHC’s objective is the relief of poverty among street homeless people in West London
through the provision of accommodation, advice and assistance.

In particular, we provide:

 London’s largest winter night shelters – 70 bed spaces every night between
November and April in different venues
 year-round daytime services including laundry, clothing and shower facilities
from our base at Chelsea Methodist Church Pastoral Centre
 a casework service – offering advice, advocacy and practical support to shelter
         guests

Each winter for the last twelve years, ten to twelve churches of different denominations
have provided the venues and volunteer teams for our winter night shelter project. Up to
70 guests are accommodated each night from 8pm until 7am and receive a cooked evening
meal and breakfast and a safe, warm and welcoming place to spend the night. We also
provide food and company to many others outside the venues who cannot access the
shelters because they are full.

The casework service operates year-round from our drop-in at Chelsea Methodist Church,
which is also the site of our café and clothing, laundry and shower facilities. We work
closely with local statutory and non-statutory agencies to provide guests with structured
support. This enables us to respond to the varying support needs amongst our client group
such as accommodation and benefits issues, drug and alcohol dependency, mental and
physical health concerns and much more.

WLCHC provides its staff a full induction as well as training opportunities. We operate an
equal opportunities policy and welcome applicants from all sections of the community.
