                                                               ACTION PLAN FOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE
               Priority for Student Performance:

Over the past five years emphasis on critical thinking skills and strategies has improved student achievement as Wheeler continues to challenge students to participate in higher level classes. Our honors students represent 49% of our
population and our AP students represent 26% of the population. The five year data trend has increased each year and we want to see this trend continue to increase; not only to close the achievement gap between the white, the
black, and Hispanic subgroups, but also to increase the numbers of students with qualifying scores on AP tests. On the GHSGT in both Math and Enhanced Language Art, we have seen an increase in "exceeds" as we have employed
critical thinking strategies. We are accutely aware of mastering AYP; however, we are concerned with the achievement gaps in both math and ELA between the white subgroup and the black, Hispanic, and ED subgroups. Also of
particular concern and directly linked to acievement is the high number of failures in the Math I course. Finally "Learning Walk" data during 2008-2009 indicate that the thinking level of synthesis and evaluation was present in only 11%
of classes visited. Use of this level of Bloom's needs to be increased. We want to continue to challenge our students in all academic areas to increase their achievement by "raising the bar".

               Student Performance Goal:

Students will increase their critical thinking skills; thus, increasing improved student achievement.

What evidence supports progress towards attainment of your goal?
              Evidence:
              • Number of students taking AP classes increased by 44 students
              • Percentage of students earning a qualifying score on an AP exam increased by 5%
              • 7% increase in number of students passing math portion of GHSGT
              • All subgroups showed increases in GHSGT/Math
              • SWD subgroup showed a 13% increase in number of students passing GHSGT/Math
              • 94% of students pass science portion of GHSGT
              • SWD subgroup showed 23% increase, ELL subgroup showed 24% increase, and ED subgroup showed 4% increase in number of students passing GHSGT/ELA
              • 3.3% increase in number of students passing GHSWT

               III. Reflections / Next Steps
Based on what you have learned, list adjustments to your plan for next year:
              • Keep math goal for improvement in Math1, Math2, and Math3 to impact achievement in all subgroups
              • Continue to stress critical thinking skills
              • Use AP Potential for 9th graders to move into accelerated courses
              • Increase collaborative team meetings to weekly; teams will post on Blackboard for Administrative review
              • Posting lesson plans
              • Math3 Support remains Core Math Support
              • Add GPS Algebra Core Support classes to remediate students prior to taking GPS Algebra
              • Preparation for Cobb County Common Core/GPS change
              • Best practices and strategies for all ELA and Math teachers with emphasis on strategies for reaching Hispanic and SWD subgroups
              • Training in Depth of Knowledge (DOK) for entire faculty
              • Training in RTI
              • Examing GHSGT/ELA for improvement
              • Use of data template to analyze students progress
              • GHSGT/ELA scores went down by 4% of all students passing

            Priority for Student Performance #2:

            Over the last four years, Wheeler High School has only met the absolute bar in all subgroups one time for the Math GHSGT. Furthermore, Cobb County did not pass AYP for 2010 on the math GHSGT portion. We are acutely aware of mastering AYP;
however, we are concerned with the achievement gaps in math between the white subgroup and the black, Hispanic, and ED subgroups. Also of particular concern and directly linked to achievement is the high number of failures in the Math I course.
We need to increase the use of the synthesis and evaluation levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. We want to challenge our students in math to increase their achievement by raising the bar. Additionally, it should be noted that the 2009-2010 school year is the
first year for GPS-based EOCT, and the 2010-2011 school year will be the first school year for the GPS-based GHSGT.

            Student Performance Goal:

Students will increase their scores and passing rates in GPS math courses and the Math GHSGT.

Priority for Sschool Performance :

Over the last two years, the School Improvement Survey has revealed that the overall domain frequency for “Student/Family/Community” is 74.89 per cent. Of particular concern is GSS: SFC2.1, Organizational Structures and Processes Encourage Student, Family and Community
Involvement of which volunteerism is a component. School-wide data reveal that volunteerism has increased, but PTSA participation has decreased to 36 volunteers. A school with 948 families and an enrollment of 2008 students should have far more school involvement than what is
represented. Wheeler’s communication with its students, parents, and community needs to be stronger and more active in order to build a more valuable, meaningful, and supportive relationship with the families and community at large.

School Performance Goal:

Wheeler will build and improve effective, meaningful, and supportive relationships and communication with families, students, and the community at-large.

          Priority for School Performance :

Although Wheeler has met the AYP requirements for the past four years, the graduation rate has slowly declined since 2005-2006. In 2005-2006, the graduation rate was 84% as compared 81.9% in 2008-2009. In the coming year, 2009-2010, the absolute bar to master the AYP
requirement for graduation rate will be 80%. In 2010=2011 Wheeler di d not meetAYP for the graduation rate. Presnelty and looking ahead it is imperitive taht Wheeler being monitoring at-risk seiors so that the graduation rate of 95% may be made for 2011-2012. Therefore, we feel
special focus should be placed on this secondary indicator.

          School Performance Goal:

Wheeler will maintain or exceed the AYP Graduation Rate requirement.
