Requirements:
Participation (20%): You are expected to participate in all activities and contribute to group
discussions on a regular basis.
Journal (30%): You are expected to write in your journal 5 times a week. In each entry you
should synthesize readings and discussions with sites/visits/tours, in addition to personal
reflections on the places we visit. The journal will be read and graded twice during the summer.
Readings (10%): Please follow the reading schedule included in this syllabus. Use our time
during train rides to prepare for classes and complete your readings. There will be four reading
groups who will conduct reading reviews in a student-centered manner four times during the
summer. Each student will have the chance to present at least once.
Text Book: Jane S. Gerber. The Jews of Spain: A History of the Sephardic Experience. 1992.
Reading Packet.
Tests (40%): There are three tests: in Madrid (May 25), Amsterdam (June 9) and Thessaloniki
(June 28).
