NEWSLETTER Welcome to Issue 1 of the Leinster Branch Newsletter. September 2011 Cups and Shields – Leinster Branch Finals: Many of the 2011 Cups and Shields Finals for Leinster have been decided over the past few weeks. Pierce Purcell Shield: The Finals of the Pierce Purcell Shield were played at Greenore GC by kind permission. In the semi-finals Rathdowney defeated Beaverstown 4/1 whilst Corrstown defeated Glen of the Downs 3½/1½. In the final Corrstown defeated Rathdowney 3/2. Jimmy Bruen Shield: The Finals of the Jimmy Bruen Shield took place at Forrest Little GC on Saturday 30th July, by kind permission. In the semi-finals Newbridge defeated Borris 3/2 whilst Forrest Little overcame Clontarf 3/2. In the final, Forrest Little defeated Newbridge by 3/2 with the deciding match concluding at the 20th Hole. Junior Cup: The Finals also took place at Greenore GC by kind permission on Saturday / Sunday 24/25th July. In the quarter finals Co. Meath defeated Castlecomer 3½/1½ whilst Corrstown defeated Newlands 3/2. Kilcoole defeated Tullamore 3/2 whilst Elm Park defeated Corballis Links 3/2. In the Semi-finals Co. Meath defeated Corrstown 4/1 and Kilcoole defeated Elm Park 3/2. In the final Co. Meath defeated Kilcoole 4/1. Barton Shield: The Finals of the Barton Shield also took place at Forrest Little GC on the same week-end as The Jimmy Bruen Shield Finals. Ardee defeated NUI Maynooth by 1 hole, Castle Barna defeated UCD by 8 holes, Enniscorthy defeated New Ross by 1 hole whilst The Island defeated Bray by 3 holes. The semi-finals saw Enniscorthy overcome The Island by 3 holes whilst Ardee defeated Castle Barna by 5 holes. The final was won by Enniscorthy who beat Ardee by 6 holes. Senior Cup: The finals took place on the Smurfit Course at The K Club, by kind permission. In the quarter finals Hermitage beat Dun Laoghaire 4/1; Castle beat Waterford 4/1; Skerries beat Portarlington 3/2 whilst Portmarnock beat Ardee 3/2. In the Semi-finals The Heritage beat Castle 3.5/1.5 and Portmarnock beat Skerries 4/1. Portmarnock won the final 3/2 overcoming Hermitage. The winners of each of the above competitions now proceed to Castlerock GC to compete in the All Ireland Cups & Shields Finals to be played from the 14th – 17th September. They take the best wishes of all Leinster Clubs in their pursuit of the coveted Green Pennants. We wish them well in their endeavours. Junior Foursomes: The Leinster Branch Finals of The Junior Foursomes took place at Hollywood Lakes GC by kind permission; The Island defeated Rosslare by 1 hole whilst Greystones defeated Mullingar by 5 holes in the Semi-finals. In the final Greystones defeated The Island by 6 holes. In the National semi-finals played at Galway GC on August 22, Greystones narrowly lost to Moyola Park by 1 hole. Irish Mixed Foursomes: The Leinster Branch Finals were played at Courtown Golf Club on Saturday 6th August, by kind permission. In the semi finals Newlands beat Malahide 3/2 and the Castle beat Baltinglass 3½/1½. The final was a close affair with Newlands emerging victorious on a score of 3/2. Newlands were narrowly defeated in their All-Ireland Semi-final at Athlone GC on 1st September. Barton Cup: The first leg of this year’s final of the FBD Barton Cup between Dunmurry Springs Golf Club and Enniscorthy Golf Club took place at Dunmurry Springs Golf Club on Saturday 20th August. Dunmurry Springs were keen to get ahead in the first leg following their narrow defeat in last year’s final by Laytown & Bettystown and they now lead 4/1 going into the 2nd leg. Enniscorthy will be seeking to add another title after winning the cup three years ago. Commencing in March, six matches were won by each club in order to reach the final with Dunmurry Springs beating last year’s winners Laytown & Bettystown in the semi finals by 3/2 while Enniscorthy were triumphant over Elm Park 3½/1½. In all, 138 affiliated clubs participated in the event which is in its 106th year and is still one of the most sought after titles for a club to win with the format being foursomes’ match play off scratch. The second leg of the final will be played at Enniscorthy Golf Club on Saturday 3rd September at 1:15 pm. Provincial Towns Cup: Kindly sponsored by Peter O'Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. In the 1st leg at Kilkenny, Moate were defeated by Kilkenny, 9 matches to nil. In the 2nd leg at Moate on the 21st August Moate exacted some revenge by winning 6-3. However Kilkenny are the champions on the overall score of 12 matches to 6. Metropolitan Cup: Kindly sponsored by Peter O'Brien & Sons (Landscaping) Ltd. In the 1st Leg, played at Milltown G.C on Sunday 14th August Miltown won by 5 matches to 4. In the 2nd Leg at Lucan G.C on Sun 28th August Lucan won by 6 ½ Matches to 2½ and won the overall with a score of 10 ½/ 7 ½ Leinster Fourball Trophy: The first leg of the final for The Leinster Fourball Trophy 2011 took place on Saturday 20th August 2011 at Glenmalure Golf Club with the home club playing host to New Forest Golf Club. Glenmalure defeated New Forest 4/1. The return leg will take place at New Forest Golf Club on Sunday 4th September. Fred Daly Trophy: Congratulations to Carton House who defeated Co Sligo in the final of the Fred Daly Championship at Ardee Golf Club, kindly sponsored by The PGA Southern Branch, and, in doing so, secured their first ever Green Pennant. Having comprehensively beaten Balmoral GC by 5 matches to 2 in the morning’s first semi final, Co Sligo defeated Munster champions Mallow by the same margin. Carton House got off to a flying start in the final with Keith Egan scoring a 5/4 win over Declan Reidy to put the first point on the board for the Leinster champions before Irish Boys International Conor Glynn added a second point with a 1 hole win over Sean Flanagan in the top singles match. Harry Coyne brought Carton’s tally to three with a 1 hole win over Alan Gaynor, before Sean O’Connor beat David Brady by 2/1 to add the decisive point and secure the trophy for the Maynooth based Club. Result; Carton House 5½, Co. Sligo 1½. Leinster Individual Winners: There were a number of notable individual performances by Leinster players this season. Richard O Donovan (Lucan) won the East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at the Co. Louth GC. Stephen Walsh (Baltinglass / UCD) won the South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at Lahinch GC. Brian Casey (Headfort) won the Leinster Youths Amateur Open Championship played at Knightsbrook GC. He later won the Irish Youths Amateur Close Championship held at Tramore GC. Marc Boucher (Carton House) won The Scottish Loretto Boys Under 14 Championship in a sudden death play-off at Aberdour Golf Club and claimed The Douglas Forsyth Trophy. Marc followed up his fine win by later taking The Irish Under 15’s Boys Amateur Open Trophy at Galway Golf Club. Charlie McMickan (Moate / Athlone) won the Leinster under 15 Amateur Close Championship at Ashbourne GC. Ross McKeever (Castle) won the Munster Boy’s Under 15 Amateur Open Championship at Cahir Park GC. Ross is the second Leinster player to win the title. David Carey (Hermitage) won the Ulster Boy’s Under 15 Amateur Open at Rockmount GC. Caolan Kennedy (Forrest Little) won the Connacht Boys’ Under 15 Amateur Open at Oughterard GC. Kevin le Blanc (The Island) won the inaugural Munster Boys’ Under 13 Open at Mallow GC. JJ Ryan (Waterford) won the Leinster Veterans Amateur Open at Craddockstown GC. Nigel Duke (Killiney) won the Connacht Seniors Amateur Open at Castle Dargan GC. Liam McNamara (Woodbrook) won the Leinster Seniors Amateur Open at Charlesland GC. Interprovincial Matches: Leinster retained the Under 15 Interprovincial Title by defeating Ulster in a thrilling ding-dong battle at Galway Golf Club on August 25th and 26th. The team members were Marc Boucher (Carton House), David Carey (Hermitage), Ted Collins (Rosslare/DunLaoghaire), Caolan Kennedy (Forrest Little) and Rowan Lester (Hermitage). In the Senior and Boys’ Interprovincial Championships held at Rosses Point, Leinster lost out narrowly in the final stages of each. Leinster Boys Under 13 Series The Leinster Boys’ Under 13 Series, sponsored by Titleist Footjoy, was kindly hosted at seven Clubs throughout the Province. The winners at each of the six qualifying venues were; (scores are gross stableford points) Dundalk Golf Club 34 Cian Commins (Ardee); Seafield Golf Club 29 Ronan Whelan (New Ross) Malahide Golf Club 27 Thomas Mulligan (Laytown & Bettystown) The Heath Golf Club 29 Paul Kelly (Glasson) Killiney Golf Club 21 Zack Glynn (Bray) Mount Juliet Golf Club 26 Kevin le Blanc (The Island) The players who returned the top six Gross Scores and top two Nett Scores at each of the venues qualified for the Under 13 Series Final which was played at Carton House GC by kind permission.
