TRAVEL GRANT ELIGIBILITY, GUIDELINES & PROPOSAL CRITERIA—FALL 2010
Graduate students currently enrolled in any program within the Department of Language, Literacy &
Sociocultural Studies (LLSS) may apply:
1. The maximum award is $500 per academic year1 for academic research related conference travel
a. Present a paper or topic; or
b. Up to $300 to attend a conference without presenting.2
2. If an applicant was awarded less than the maximum allowed ($500) during the same academic
year, then that applicant may apply for additional funding not to exceed the allowable amount.
3. A portion of the travel shall fall within the semester funding period.
4. The eligible funding periods follow:
a. Fall 2010: June 1st through December 31st.
All application materials shall be submitted no later than 5pm, January 28, 2011.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
One original complete application packet shall include:
1. Cover Page:
a. Complete the Cover Page provided by LLSS-GSA, and
b. Attach other required documents.
2. Statement of Proposal:
a. Two (2) page limit.
b. Follow LLSS-GSA application criteria.
c. Do not include personal information that may identify you.3
3. The Committee Shall Only Consider Complete Applications.
4. Submit a two (2) page limit report to LLSS-GSA upon your return from the conference.
Academic Year: As defined by the University of New Mexico Student Financial Aid Office.
Where several applicants are involved in the same activity, each must apply separately.
All proposals will be evaluated via a blind review process.
1. Relevance to Professional Development:
a. Your proposal should describe the activity’s tangible benefits to your academic and
professional aspirations, goals, development, degree(s), etc.
b. Conference presentations, discussions, networking and establishing professional contacts are
appropriate objectives but should be incorporated into your overall academic goal(s). These
goal(s) should also be related to the learning process involved in attending the conference.
c. Priority will be given to complete applications that follow submission guidelines.
2. Event Documentation:
a. Presenters: Your application shall include documentation evidencing that the
conference/event has accepted your proposal and the event’s program that lists your name.
b. Attendees: Your application shall include the event’s program, with date(s) and location(s)
that correspond to your grant request and proof of registration.
3. Budget Guidelines:
a. LLSSGSA will only fund five conference categories: (1) air fare, (2) transportation, (3)
registration costs, (4) lodging, and (5) shuttle fees.
b. You may request $0.32/mile, if traveling by car.
c. Only original receipts shall be accepted to process reimbursements.
4. LLSS Proof of Enrollment:
a. Obtain your official proof of enrollment (Enrollment Verification Certificate) from the Office
of the Registrar.4
1. LLSSGSA shall notify all applicants of its funding decision via email on or around February 7, 2011.
2. Funds shall be applied to the applicant’s student account.
3. All funding decisions are FINAL.
